Hi to all - and forgive me if this has been asked recently. I started IV meds this week and the nurse who came to my house to administer the first dose also has had Lyme for 30 years. She stressed to me the importance of boosting the immune system and keeping it strong as a way to keep symptoms from cropping up. She gave me a few pointers and I have ordered a book from Amazon about it, but I want to post here because so many of you are very knowledgeable about all of this. So tell me, what do you do to help keep your immune systems as strong as they can be?

lmz,

Do you mind sharing the title of the book you just ordered? As your nurse is also dealing with lyme and she suggested it, it is probably a good one.

Just be sure not to try any "boosting" that is not suggested by LLMD or ILADS' authors or researchers. What might work for others in the general public may not be a good idea for lyme patients.

Actually, for simplicity, let's say that there are two parts to the immune system. For lyme patients, one part is actually on overdrive so any boosting could be dangerous. The other part to the immune system is not working very well, so support is important.

It's not that simple, but it is clear that any work written for the general population is not geared specifically enough for the unique properties of lyme.

Supporting the immune system is essential - but it can mean easing up in some ways, not boosting.

This may just be a matter of semantics but their are a lot of products on the market offering a "boost" and some of those can be far too harsh for the endocrine system of a lyme patient. The endocrine system (and that includes adrenals) is usually very damaged from lyme so it's especially important not to further stress that system by trying to boost another.

Adrenal support is just one area discussed in by the authors below. Support for the nervous system and cardiac system, too, are in these works. By resting as much as required and by gentle moving the body, and with other good self-care, this will all help the immune system.

There are some specific supplement for those with lyme. Probiotics are a very important one to consider to help the immune system. Liver support supplements, too, as mentioned in a post above.

Many others suggestions are here (and you can also search previous threads for some others that are true support):

This book, by an ILADS member LLMD, holds great information about treatments options and support measures:

In addition to treating the lyme + co., good self-care and support supplements - also trying to eliminate exposure to mold, scented products, chemicals, etc. can help all systems of your body.
