Hi everyone! I'm a long standing member here but went into remission for over a year and haven't been around. Now my Lyme is back in the form of arthritis, and I've had two cortisone shots. I now have no pain but I've heard that these shots are bad for people with Lyme. What am I in for now?

Have you treated for parasites and worms? Check out the symptom list

at www.humaworm.com

Continuos cortisone shot can lower your immune system. Arthritis is indicative of infection and primary for Lyme. Please look into the parasite connection,

Well sounds like you figured out steroids are a big no no. They weaken the immune system allowing Lyme to really take hold. Initially you'll feel much better when on steroids but it doesn't last.

Get back in touch with your LLMD pronto. You'll probably need to go back on a short course of ab to nip your flair in the bud.

Blake is supposed to get one in his back and now he thinks he shouldn't.....but he is still in excruciating back pain and doesn't know what else to do. Is it really that bad to get one?

I think you can do it in extreme circumstances as long as you're on abx at the same time....

Well I had mine before I realized they are bad for you. I have to say, it saved my life. The pain was so bad that nothing touched it and I wasn't sleeping at night. Now I just take neurontin and I'm fine. No more percocets and I sleep like a baby. However, my orthopedist told me that IV abx will knock out the arthritis, so that's what I'm shooting for.

As for Blake, I know how much pain he's in and the shots make such a huge difference. I think he should try it.

Tracy9,

I had many epidural injections due to debilitating back pain. At the time I didn't know I had Lyme.

I really don't know if it made my symptoms worse or not. I really noticed the back pain more than the joint pain at the time.

One thing about the epidurals is the steriod is localized and isn't supposed to be absorbed into the rest of the body.

If he is in that much pain then he should go ahead with it. I have been where he is at and it is no fun.

The epidurals pretty much only bought me 6-8 weeks of comfort at a time. I got them every 8 weeks for 1 1/2 years. I then finally had back surgery and got my life back.

Do the ortho's in Putnum specialize in neck and

back arthritits? I have cervical stenosis and

bone spurs in the foramen, the last shot I had

really messed me up. I will

no longer have any steroid shots. The last shot

I got was a depo medrol shot which is long

acting and screwed me up bad!!! I had recieved 4

shots in less than a year before I suspected

that I had lyme and none of them really seemed

to do much. They actually made things worse in

the long run. The antibiotics seem to be doing

more than the steroid shots. This last shot I

recieved sent me into fluid overload, and

steroid psychosis. And can take 6-9 months

before the effects are totally out of my system.

I had total panick attacks, near fainting

episodes and blood pressures through the roof. I

was hospitalized twice and now my left arm

doesn't work right. When the pain management doc

wanted to do this shot he told me the only risk

was that I could become paralyzed in that arm,

but that was rare and two other spine docs told

me that the benefits far outweight the risk. So

I went through with the shot, which to this day

I wish I had never done!!

So be forwarned about steroid shots.

The shots themselves are being used "off label"

(meaning they use the drug not as directed), by

pain management doctors. In the actual

information fact sheet that comes in the

packaging of the med states right on it, not for

intrathecal use. These meds are actually

neurotoxic. And can damage nueral tissue when

being used around the spine. Google severe

adverse effects of depo medrol or kenalog spinal

injections which what most docs use. There has

been permanent damage done to some patients in

the form of adhesive arachnoiditis, and other

serious infections like meningitis. Be an

educated patient!! Do not let these doctors

shoot things into your spine without the proper

information ahead of time.

I'm not exactly sure what they specialize in but it would be worth it to give them a call. And they DO take Medicaid.
