I will be starting to take Rifampin soon. The note on the bottle says to take the pill one hour before or two hours after eating.

My doxycycline also said to take on an empty stomach, which in turn made me vomit.

Anyone taking Rifampin, is it standard to take it on an empty stomach? Thanks!

Yes from personal experience Rifampin is way more effective on an empty stomach

I give it to my 4 year old twins with a little applesauce on an empty stomach. (They can't swallow pills.) It doesn't seem to bother them.

I was just wondering this too. I'll be starting Rifampin as soon as I get to the drug store.

And yes, the Doxy bottle does say to take it on an empty stomach. [puke]

Doxy did a number on my daughter's stomach even after pharmacist said to take with food...Rifampin he said MUST be taken on empty stomach because of absorption..the Rif did not bother her at all.

Good luck

On an empty stomach is best, but what I often do with new drugs is to take them with food for the first few days and then start taking it without. It helps ease me into it.

I had bad nausea from Rifampin and had to be very careful to eat with it. I'd say try with less and less food to see if you can tolerate on empty stomach, but dont start that way right off the bat.

Tiramisu, how long did it take for you to get used to Rifampin? Can you tolerate taking it without food now?

I took my first dose yesterday morning. About an hour later I was hit with extreme head pressure, dizziness, and nausea. Quickly proceeded to vomiting and dry heaves. Not a performance i'd like to repeat.

Since I couldn't be late to work again today I tried it with Zofran. It worked but unfortunately I will not be able to take it twice a day every day with my Rifampin since insurance won't cover that many pills for one month.

So, I need to figure out how else to take the Rifampin and keep it down.

Anyone else, did you have this problem? Did you grow to tolerate the med over time?
