I am going through quite an ordeal and I do not know what to think. On the 18th, I saw my new LLMD for the first time. She said she felt I was low in magnesium so she gave me an IM shot of magnesium in the office. It instantly relaxed me and calmed down my heart. I have been known to have tachycardia and palpitations all the time.
The day after the shot, I started feeling bad. Muscle twitching increased, my anxiety went through the roof, I was shaky, and I could feel my heart skipping beats. I have always had sinus rhythm so this was scary for me. I went to the ER last Wednesday and they did not find anything other than tachycardia. I did have an elevated WBC count as well as elevated neutrophils. My temp was also higher than normal as well. They sent me home and it just got worse for the rest of the week. It got to the point where my heart would pound so hard when I was standing that I just decided to stay in bed.
Saturday night I gave myself another IM magnesium shot like my LLMD told me to do. Again, it instantly relaxed me and my heart immediately calmed down. It was great. Yesterday and today have been horrible and it is just getting worse. It feels like my heart will skip at times and my heart does not feel right to me at all. I feel really shaky and jittery. My anxiety is terrible. It is like this impending doom where I just feel like I am going to die. I have no appetite at all. I am not on anything else other than vitamins.
I called my LLMD today about this and they told me to do half the shot twice a week. I feel horrible and I know it is only going to get worse as the week goes on.
Is this normal? I am so scared and worried about my heart. It just does not feel right. Is this a herx or why is this happening and I feel so bad? Oral magnesium makes me feel bad as well but not this bad.

You may need to do daily magnesium shots for a while. I did for months, years ago. And, I hope they told you this, if you put B-12 in with the magnesium, the shots will not hurt nearly as much.
I don't think it's a reaction at all the magnesium but your body saying it needs it daily. That was my experience, anyway.
What is the dose of your shot? 1 cc ?
Are you also taking good B-complex? And are you taking magnesium capsules on the days you don't do the shot? That would be vital so you don't have such a drop of the level.

You aren't taking vitamins on an empty stomach, are you? That can make anyone feel all the things you describe, especially the B-vitamins. Even a banana is not enough food in the stomach for B-vitamins.
I hope you can eat as that is important to regulate all the body functions. If not, be sure to get a good protein powder and a good greens powder. See if a friend will come and make you some food to leave for a few meals. Eggs are always good - and easy, too (but I still need more than that for B-vitamins to not make me feel ill).
I hope this gets better. What you describe sounds, to the letter, like very low magnesium. The fact that it happens on the days you don't get your shot says a lot. Really, daily shots did wonders for me.
You will also need to be sure to get increased calcium and zinc (calcium needs to be in balance with magnesium but do not increase zinc too much, though).
Thank you for your help. The bottle of IM mag is 2 mL. I have not been taking oral mag at all. My LLMD did not say if I should or not in between the shots.
I have not tried to take my B-complex in about a month. It tore my stomach up pretty bad when I tried it. I think it was because I was not eating enough with it.
I think I am B anemic because my MCV and MCH are always elevated.
My calcium level is also on the high side. At the ER the other day it was within normal range but very close to being high.

I did IM Magnesium shots for years. Great stuff, I think I did like 2-3x per week. I believe it takes a few weeks to build up the levels in your system to see the full benefit. If your on IV you can get it in an IV bag too and do 2-3 x per week.

Do you also have bartonella? Have read that Dr F thinks magnesium either feeds bartonella or the mystery protozoa -- not sure which.
Epsom salts baths are an easy way to absorb magnesium. If you can't take a complete bath then you can just soak your hands or feet. Most likely you are defiecient in magnesium and it is activating some enzyme pathways which have not been working correctly due to the deficiency.
You can add baking soda to the epsom salts in the bath and it seems like it made it work better for hubby. He went through a period where he had to take daily baths for about 2 or 3 months. Then we cut back to a couple of times a week and now he just does it a couple of times a month. But with the heat his sweating has increased and I think we will have to resume the baths to balance his electrolytes.
I agree that smaller doses of magnesium more frequently would probably be better than large doses less frequently.
The goal with the baths is to work up to 3 cups of epsom salts and 2 cups of baking soda. Hubby also adds 1 - 2 tablespoons of dry mustard powder to increase circulation. Also 2 or 3 teaspoons of potassium salt substitute can be added.
