ILADS LLMD refused to prescribe my husband Actos. My husband is currently taking Questran.

My husband has trouble detoxing, proven by HLA type tests. He has bad entire body inflammation, bad neck pain, extreme fatigue, and migraines.

LLMD said he's found that Actos doesn't work well for his patients. When I asked if it could be harmful, he said it can cause hypoglycemia.

I had horrible reactions to Actos. Horrible. I tried it a couple times and it was always the same for me.

Hypoglycemia can be dangerous, too. New research shows that it is much harder on the body than just feeling woozy and needing to eat.

It was prescribed for me by my LLMD at the same time as Cholestyramine. I've been on it for 3 years. I have puffy ankles which one of my doctors thinks is caused by the actos, another one says no.

Actos can cause edema. I have other reasons to have edema but my guess is that actos is causing some edema in me.

My sister tried to take it and could not. She felt it caused edema but her doctor did not. When she went off, she lost 7 lbs which she felt was caused by actos. She has diabetes. I have pre-diabetes but actos doesn't seem to bother me.

My LLMD told me not to take it before bedtime because it can cause hypoglycemia. I don't seem to have a problem with hypoglycemia at this time although I have had problems with hypoglycemia but that was before I started actos.

I'm wondering if you see my NY LLMD ..... I couldn't get Actos either. I also couldn't tolerate the cholestyramine.

I was underweight at the time and tend to be hypoglycemic (LLMD said so) .... so I thought maybe it was because of that.

I remember in my research at the time, just Googling about detoxing with cholestyramine, I came across an alternative that is natural to the Actos .... unfortunately I can't remember what it is. [Frown] But with some sleuthing, you might come across it. It was an article on naturnal stuff to replace BOTH the cholestyramine and the Actos. Looked interesting. If I come across it again, I'll post it.

If you can't take Actos, there is always another to achieve whatever you wanted that to achieve. Always. And you may already be doing it with something in your supplement protocol if your LLMD suggested that.

Mine too, but only for a few days. It killed my stomach and I stopped taking it.

STINGING NETTLE (Urtica dioica)

Stinging nettle leaf is bitter in taste and cooling in action. It cleanses the blood. Nettle seed nourishes and removes toxins from the kidneys.

. . .

Research Highlights

* Nettle leaf extracts reduce inflammation, in part, by suppressing the release of inflammatory cytokines.

They do this by blocking a chemical inducer known as NF-KappaB, which alters gene expresion. This may be one explanation for the beneficial efffects this herb has exhibited in rheumatoid arthritis (Riehemann et al., 1999).

* One set of in vitro experiments on live blood using extracts of stinging nettle leaf exhibited its ability to slow down the inflammatory cytokine response caused by endotoxins.

In the same experiments, when there was no endotoxin present, the nettle leaf actually stimulated an immune response.

Researchers believed these results could explain the positive effects of this extract in the treatment of rheumatic diseases (Obertreis B et al., 1996).

. . .

* Stinging nettle is an approved medicine for the treatment of prostate diseases in Germany (Vahlensieck, Jr et al., 1996).

I really like the Eclectic Institute brand, although there are other good brands here, too: http://www.vitacost.com

A search for Sarsaparilla (Smilax) at the above sites will also prove fruitful as will one on Gotu Kola. Both have wonderful properties to help reduce toxins from the blood (Gotu Kola) and from the gut (Smilax).

Thanks, everyone! And sixgoofykids, I just now bought the Biotics KappArest online, which was mentioned in the article you linked to. It's not too expensive, and I've had good experience with the Biotics brand with other things.

Lymenet is great!

I come across a bunch of stuff about Actos causing heart failure. My mom has very significant heart issues and now I am worried

about continuing to take it. Anyone else heard about this? I have been on it for quite a

while, but I am getting older and my cholesterol is high....

I recently took Actos for about 3 days to mitigate cholestyramine herx.

I got really bad lower abdominal pain, and general feeling of being sick.

I think I'll quit the Actos and keep on with the cholestyramine, just a little at a time.

I'll take my chances with the herxes. I hear they get better as you get rid of the toxins.

I hear the lower ab pain can be an indicator of liver damage which I sure don't need.
