I took a tick off my hubby after a BBQ at a friend's house. It had a tiny piece of skin in it's mouth but there was no bleeding or puncture mark, and in fact I could not even see a mark where it had been on his arm.
Does this count as a bite?

It does in my book.
How many of us don't remember the bite itself?
Or removed un-attached ticks only to become sick?
On this site alone, you could probably find examples of each of the above.

Yes. If it had skin in it's mouth, it was attached.

Cactus,
do you mean ticks that were just crawling on someone and they became sick?? Less than 2 weeks ago, my sister found a dog tick crawling up her leg. My mom hosed it off of her (so no one touched it with bare hands), and so far she has seemed to be OK.
Is there risk in that situation??? I thought if they attach, they suck until they are full and fall off.

Ocean - sorry to cause panic.
What I meant was that if one is removing one un-attached tick, there is the chance that it was attached at some point and one would not know.
Or that where there is one tick, there may be more.
And we all know that they can be very hard to find, even with a thorough tick check.
They can be tiny, and easily missed.
One does not necessarily feel them, or the bite.
Ticks are so stealthy.
My next door neighbor has "never had a tick bite," but has found ticks crawling on her body and disposed of them.
She is sick now, and in Lyme Denial (after watching the ordeal unfold next door).
Personally, I think she has Lyme.
I think she has had a bite, but does not know it.
