I wanted to let you all know that I've found something to help my levaquin-tendonitis.

I bought some magnesium chelate amino acid (Solaray brand) at Whole Foods, and after taking it for three days have seen a marked improvement, probably 50% better.

I had been in the boot-cast for about 10 days without too much improvement, and was beginning to get frustrated.

Might be worth a try for those in the same boat.

Take care everyone.

Question; is this right after taking the Levaquin or does it recur?

I had it right after taking it but now it recurs periodically. Does anyone else struggle with that?

I took the levaquin (one pill) about a month ago and have had problems ever since, so mine's not a recurring problem, just an ongoing one.

I would think it would help recurring problems too, especially if we don't have enough mg in our systems.

Have also heard some doctors have their pts. take it for awhile before starting levaquin.

I just take the recommended 200mg per day.

Did some research and found out mg can be toxic if you take too much.

Not to mention the 'laxative effect.'

Glad to hear magnesium helps. You can increase your magnesium to bowel tolerance and then back down a bit. Be sure your calcium is in balance with that, too, as both help tremendously. (Just be sure to read if these are okay to take when on a particular medicine and, if so, it timing it away from med matters.)

According to some of the articles I've read about this, tendon problems can occur for sometime after taking this classification of medicine. Therefore, whatever protective measure are used during treatment should be continued for many months following.

I developed Achilles Tendon weakness and pain in both legs on Levaquin, went off the drug, and the pain continued and worsened long after. I had to use a cane for over a year.

Eventually it subsided but has recurred lately, especially if I attempt to walk up or down a little hill. I can only wear very padded flat shoes or athletic shoes.

I was taking oral magnesium while on Levaquin. A friend of mine cured her Levaquin tendonitis by getting intramuscular injections of magnesium about two or three times a week for many, many months. I've tried a few injections (I got a prescription for compounded magnesium) but have had a hard time finding a nurse to pay to inject me because my Lyme doctor is in another city.

My LLMD recently recommended magnesium lotion or oil. There are several you can find on the internet. A Lyme friend of mine is having good results with it.

I had tried a Pekana homeopathic cream specifically made for tendonitis, put it right on the tender areas for months, and it didn't do anything.

Icing the area gives me temporary relief.

I don't know about that one. I heard about the mg chelate amino acid on another discussion on levaquin problems.

So I decided to give it a try, and it helped. The guy at Whole Foods said it had good absorption.

Hope you get relief.

Thanks for posting this. I needed the reminder.

Last time around, I took magnesium before starting and during the Levaquin. No tendonitis.

This time around, I'm on a higher dose AND I forgot to do that and guess what I have! [Roll Eyes]

It DOES feel better for a couple of days when I remember to take the magnesium. I've been taking Magnesium Oxide, Magnesium Stearate and Magnesium Asporotate(chelated combo of Aspartate, Citrate, Orotate & Magnesium Oxide), along with some calcium.

I'm not sure what's helping, but I had them on hand & the combo seems to work for me. If I run low, I'll have to try to narrow it down. [Smile]

Whenever you take Levaquin or Cipro you have to take magnesium supplements to prevent tendon damage.

I took Cipro for 2 months last fall. My upper arms are what still hurt at times (especially while laying on my sides).

This is what Burrascano says about levaquin induced tendonitis:

"It has been suggested that loading the patient with magnesium may prevent this problem, and if the tendons do become affected, parenteral high dose vitamin C (plus parenteral magnesium) may afford rapid relief." (p. 25 of his Guidelines)

I switched from magnesium oxide to magnesium glycinate (AA chelate) and my tendons improved around that time. THanks for the post, I thought they finally just stopped hurting!

I tore two major tendons on levaquin had to stop but this was after 3.5 months on it I had warnings deep down soreness along the bone when walking up and down steps. Dont move fast it can induce tearing so can too much weight move slow and tell the Dr. Try the magnesium but dont do it to close to the time you take levaquin say 2or 3 hrs after.

It does gooaway but mine took a year and a half.
