Hi everyone,

I have searched quite a bit about whether my joints will recover with abx. From what I found some do and some don't.

What are your thoughts?

Thanks

Here's what I've learned...if the pain is caused by infammation of tissue around the joint (caused by infection) then abx will reduce the inflammation and the joint pain will cease.

But, if lyme has caused arthritis of the joint, the pain is there to stay.

X-rays and MRIs are helpful. My hip pain is caused by inflammation of tissue, but I have arthritis in my kness, shoulders and wrists.

Hope this is helpful.

Thanks Kim,

Is it safe to say that if the joint pain comes and goes it is probably inflammation and not arthritis?

lymetime,

I don't know if it is significant whether the pain comes and goes. My athritis pain comes and goes, but my hip pain (from inflammation) is always present. It really becomes severe with abx. I'll be very happy to get rid of my hip pain!

hey lymetime,
just some of my thoughts; been sick for 10 years with arthritis/joint pain being WORST symptoms...still have plenty of problems, but after years of antibiotics there are days I can run 4 to six miles - i used to not be able to walk to the mailbox the pain was so bad.
hang in there.

Arthritis was my earliest symptom. It flares from time to time, once in a blue moon, and can flare during high allergy seasons for some reason. But, yeah, it's thanfuly mostly gone. The flares are never as bad as it was back when I first got Lyme.

Whatever you do, don't assume that joint pain is arthritis. The pain may be caused by muscle or other soft tissue inflamation due to LD or an old injury.

LD can cause muscles to be inflamed and tight. These muscles then pull on their attachments to the bones, i.e. the tendons, which can then cause pain in the joint.

I highly recommend the Trigger Point Therapy Workbook. It has helped me tremendously with LD related muscle and joint pain.

It has also helped with old injuries. I was hit by a car while cycling over 20 years ago. I had pain under my right knee cap for years and thought I had a slight meniscus tear.

I aggravated my knee hiking and checked my Trigger Point book since it had helped with my shin splints and tennis elbow. It only took a few minutes to find out the problem was actually being caused by a muscle in my upper thigh which ran from my hip to under my knee cap.

One week of self-massage and my knee pain was gone. Unfortunately, it's not always that easy.

I think that's a really good recommendation- I just developed some new joint pain while on Flagyl therapy and my new acupuncturist pointed out that some of the muscles near the painful joints were exceedingly tight.

I hadn't even noticed that myself, since I was so focused on the joint issues. She just touched a spot to illustrate something she was saying, and that's when I noticed that the muscle was a dense knot, which is unusual for me.

Jason,

Wow. Good Observation.

You mentioned trigger point and the same thing happened to me around xmas time last year.

In fact, my Chiropractor referred to it as the same thing.

After stopping abx, all the muscles, joints and ligaments in my back became inflamed just as you described! I was in such pain I couldnt even walk.

It was if the toxins needed to be released, or something of that sort.

After some visits to the chiropractor, I finally took my LLMD's advice (DUH) and got several theraputic massages and OILA!! it really worked.

Thanks for this post. Maybe others will read and use this therapy as well. Hopefully they will find results as we did.

Best in health. [Smile]
