From Planet Trhive:
"Artemisinin is an isolated constituent, cryptolepis is a whole herb, as such it is better for the body and much harder for bacteria to develop resistance to--at this point malaria is developing a rapid resistance to artemisinin but not to cryptolepis. Artemisinin has more side effects, crypto much less--it is much safer for the liver, no side effects have been noted to its use. That is what I would use if I were you."

Cryptolepis does not help me, but Artemisinin has. Everyone responds differently though.

Crypto knocked my Babs down but it seems to be rearing its head again since doing the Pyrroluria KPU protocal. My body did not seem to want Art per energy testing.

Can you use both at the same time? Crypto and Art?
Thanks,

I'm not clear why people don't just use artemesia annua then -- it's the whole herb.

I took both Artemisinin and Cryptolepis, but only one dose each per day. They both helped a lot, ie, removed symptoms right away.

The problem with the whole herb artemesia is that I don't think I have ever read an equivalent dose comparing it to the different derivatives such as artemesinin etc -- Who knows it might take 1 pound of the whole herb to equal one bottle of artemesinin -- obviously an exageration, but I think the point is valid.
In Chinese medicine a dose of a single herb is often 15 grams per day -- compared to herbal tinctures in the U.S. which often suggest one dropper or powdered herbs suggesting one capsule (500 mg). When hubby went to a real herbalist the one thing I learned was that effective doses had to be much higher such as a teaspoon of tincture (5 droppers) for example.

CherylSue,
I was the one on Planet Thrive who asked Buhner that question because I had previous liver damage from Ketek and all my LLMDs are concerned about artemisinin, etc., for me with the liver history - and I have Babesia Duncani so it's going to be tough.
I've been on Crypto for a few months, have been ramping up slowly because it makes me spacey and headachy, but didn't get up to the full dose because I recently developed very bad GI problems from something - probably the addition of Malarone but who knows. So I went off the herbs.
One of my LLMDs thinks highly of it, another of my LLMDs usually uses artemisinin/artemisia but was interested in being educated on Crypto, which is another reason I posted that question for Buhner.

Jill,
So what was your overall impression of Crypto? Is the malerone better? Did you take crypto without abx? What combos have you been on?
Has your LLMD had a lot of success with it? Is that Dr. H. in California?
Just wondering. I tried a drop, yesterday and herxed I think. I'm so sensitive to everything. Thanks, CherylSue
