Hi all,
Sadly, we just got testing showing my 2 year old (almost 3) daughter has babesia (Positive FISH).
Over the past 8 months, she has been improving on bartonella/lyme treatment with Bactrim/amoxicillin, but she still sometimes complains of being tired when we play outside.
Lately, she has not wanted to go in the sun as much, but has very few symptoms now. Even though Dr. J told me at the last appt 3 weeks ago that he didn't think she had babesia, I have been thinking she could have it. And sure enough, she got a positive FISH this time, after several negative tests over the past year.
We recently had to stop giving her zith since she was getting stomach aches. I have a call with Dr. J on Sunday to discuss the recent test results.
Now I'm thinking that we should switch the amoxicillin to biaxin since I'm sure Dr. J will put her on Mepron. He had one of my boys on Mepron with Omnicef (he couldn't tolerate zith) and I felt that very little progress was made over 8 months of babs treatment until I asked to switch the Omnicef for biaxin so he could have a macrolide with the Mepron. Now his night sweats and headaches are finally going away.
I don't want my daughter on Mepron without a macrolide since I want to keep the treatment time as short as possible! I'm thinking biaxin will be a good bet, so long as it's OK for a 2 year old.
Have any of you treated your young children with it?
Thanks for your input.

My son is 2 1/2. He has had lyme, babs, and bartonella since birth. He was initially taking zithromax and amoxicilin.
He took this combo for a year. The zithromax started causing a slight increase in liver enzymes so we switched him to biaxin.
He is currently taking biaxin and Mepron. We will be adding Ceftin tomorrow, as well.
The first 2 weeks that he was on biaxin, it caused him to have constipation and it initially was causing him nausea because I wasn't giving him enough to eat before his biaxin does. After I started giving him more food with the biaxin, the nausea was no longer an issue.
He's had no other issues with it and the constipation is no longer a problem.
He's been on biaxin now for about four months.

lymers-
Thank you so much! By the way, what dosage form do you give him? My older boys (5 year old twins) are on the liquid form and Dr. J hesitated to give it to them because of the taste. I insisted on giving it a try and they now take it as long as I have it flavored with raspberry and as long as they get an M&M after I give it to them!
Have you had any issues with getting your 2 1/2 year old to take it?
Thanks so much!

I am sorry to hear of this.
Atleast though, you caught it.
I have no expereince with Biaxin at 2, only at 6.
It seemed to be a good one in the way of helping symptoms. No side-effects that I could visibly see.

I give him the liquid form of biaxin. He didn't like the tast at all in the beginning, but he seems to have gotten used to it now. It doesn't seem to bother him. I didn't know about the flavoring. That's a good idea.
