I just started risperdone. Lyme reeked havoc on my brain and I developed a mood disorder called cyclothymia. It is a milder form of bipolar.
Lyme is known for causing mood issues. I do not exactly buy into what people call "lyme rage"; but believe you can develop mental disorders that can cause anger, irritability, mood swings, anxiety, depression, etc.
I was taking Lamictal, but had a muscle reaction to it. I have only been on risperidone for about a week. It works very fast! Already my anxiety level has dropped drastically. I am even sleeping a little better and my moods seem to be leveling out. I am on the smallest dose, but may increase the dosage in a few days.

lotus, I hope you come back. I am interested in whether you have tried this med and how it is working for you.
So far, so great for me. I feel so much better already! Doc said it works fast; not like antidepressants that can take months to see results.
So far I feel so hopeful about this med!

First of all if you need psych meds your brain is already damaged. If you treat in time you can actually reset the brain. For many ppl psych meds are neccessary and a life saver.
Onbam, don't go overboard reading about one highly unlikely side effect. All medications come with their own list of unwanted risk. Even OTC medications carry serious risk.
People can die from taking an antibiotic; but if you have LD the benefit probably outweighs the risk for most of us. The same holds true for people with mental issues.
Not that I am a promotor of pysch meds or any meds for that matter. But you have to do what you have to do to function.

I'm going to a psychiatrist next week. I normally go 1 time per year to get my meds regulated (low dose Prozac) for non Lyme related problem. I had just weaned OFF of it before I got Lyme. Now my anxiety level is freaky, my cognitive functioning is slow, which has been noticed at work ( I work with therapists in mental health)& I'm supposed to be the one helping the mentally ill! I have even had mild hallucinations, at one point, but not now. Also mild delusions & paranoia which have really got me on edge. I'm a firm believer in psych meds, but if one can learn & rewire their brain to do without, then wonderful.

I 100% agree!
Sometimes we have no choice but to use pysch meds. In many cases it is only temporary.
Many ppl misunderstand problems with the brain. For some reason some don't see the brain as an organ that can malfunction. But its no different than your pancreas or heart malfunctioning. No one expects you to make those 2 organs heal themselves without treatment. Yet they think you should be able to somehow magically repair your brain.
Once the damage is done to the brain, it needs to be treated. Ignoring it, you can run the risk of irreversible damage.
Sorry lotus......you were specifically asking about risperidone. Where did you go?

My daughter was on geodon for three years. It really helped her sleep and calmed high anxiety.
However, like someone said, we started noticing facial tics like tourettes. Eye blinks, head movements, etc.
When she was prescribed Geodon, she was 90 lbs heavier (due to this stupid disease), and hadn't started treatment for what was really causing the depression/insomnia/anxiety/ocd.
She veeeeery gradually worked off of it, and, thank God, the facial tics didn't become permanent.
So, use them if you need to, but watch for these symptoms which can become permanent.
