We have been to the LLMD and confirmed that our daughter indeed has lyme after review of the IGeneX report and symptoms over the past year and a half. It's about time someone got it right!

Anyway, she was on Doxy for 3 weeks and has been switched to 1000 mgs/day of amox. However, she experiences pretty uncomfortable abdominal pain anytime she eats. She is only able to handle small meals 4x/day and really can't afford to loose any more weight. She has lost almost 30lbs in the past year and a half (and she didn't have the weight available to loose!). The LLMD feels the Lyme settled in her GI tract as has been seeing happen in teens lately. The pain is not excruciating but very uncomfortable. She says it feels like someone dragged their fingernails through her stomach.

The dr put her on a high fiber (no gluten) diet as she suffers from cronic constipation. She also is taking mega supplements and multivitamins as well as digestives and probiotics.

Has anyone else had this problem or have any suggestions? She is really uncomfortable, her LLMD is out of town for the next week and I have a feeling if we call her GI doctor he will admit her for "observation". He was one that felt there was no way she had Lyme.

We are just ready for her to get on the path to wellness and thought once she was definately diagnosed and started the antibiotics, she would start to feel better. She did go through a herxing period that lasted a good week, but we are going on a month of treatment now. She is starting to get frustrated and a little depressed.

Any help would be great - thank you!

mom,

you mentioned what i was thinking about GLUTEN FREE DIET; please edit subject line and add GLUTEN FREE DIET in effect now.

how about dairy? i discovered i'm allergic to gluten ... wheat & barley

plus casein ... all milk, egg whites, cheeses, and garlic

that's my best advise. raising this up for others to comment.... hugs/kisses to you both!

hi cm,

wow, that is shame your daughter and i feel very bad for her.

does she take the doxy or abx with FOOD? its very harsh on the stomach and this can help. also do not take with or near dairy products.

also lots of water is highly recommended upon taking abx.

i was wondering if you are you using a powerful refrigerated probiotic such as VSL#3? its extremely effective in putting back the good bacteria that abx constantly destroys.

http://www.vsl3.com/

vsl is recommended for those with gastrointestinal issues.

i would definitely check in with the doctor's office as maybe an assistant could help or get a message to your llmd.

also some folks use products like nexium and prevecid (OTC) for stomach distress. that is worth a shot too and not a prescription.

there are lots of gluten free products such as ice cream (coconut milk) at the health food store. perhaps you can add the calories with goodies she enjoys to put some meat back on her bones. [Smile]

i do hope she finds some relief soon. [Smile]

Did the abdominal pain start before the antibiotics? If so describe it in more detail because I have this too and it is getting better after 8 months of Rocephin and Zithromax.

Before the treatment I was sent for every test -cat scan, ultrasound, etc. and nothing showed up. I knew all along it had to be from the disease and sure enough it is about 75% better. now.

Have had abdominal and stomach pain in the past and have used DGL (degglycerized licorice) tablets from a health food store, and aloe vera juice. Both are soothing and helpful and basically no side effects. The aloe vera usually helps with constipation too!

Recently over the last 3 months I have had severe abdominal pain. It turned out to mostly be from untreated Bartonella that decided to come to the forefront. Taking Cipro for 2 weeks and the abdominal pain is amazingly better.

I agree with other posters that diet is needed of no wheat and even no starch carbs at times. Apples seem helpful to me and calm the digestive system due to their pectin and fiber. Also, low or no sugar. lots of veggies. Hope this helps.

Thank you everyone for your replies! The pain gets worse after eating. She is taking probiotics (MegaFlora and ABx Support). The pain did start after starting on the Doxy and now Amox.

She has also had just about every test under the sun (cat scans, ultrasounds, etc.) all clean with the exception of cronic constipation. We are attempting to deal with that with increased fiber. She is trying to eat 4 small meals a day but does not look forward to any of the them because the pain gets worse after.

She is just so frustrated and tired of being sick and tired! We are worried depression is starting to set in. It is so hard to watch a girl who was so full of live and healthy 18 mos ago now be so frail and uncomfortable. I wish I could turn back the clock......

I agree it may be actual lyme infection.

I had abdominal scans done for stomach pain.

Thought it was gallbladder but they could not find

anything. Horrible stabbing pain. This was about

a year and a half into being sick with this.

Whatever she craves she probably needs even if it

is not in the form she can have it you can

figure it out by whatever it is comprised of or

high in content. Our bodies are amazing at

telling us these things.

Please ask your doctor about this antibiotic. It is called xifaxin. IT is an antibiotic that treats the wrong bacteria in your stomach, or put another way, treats dysbiosis.

http://www.aolhealth.com/drugs/rifaximin?flv=1

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dysbiosis

Do three weeks on the xifaxin along with your regular medications, and increase your probiotics between meals and at bedtime. They work better on an empty stomach.

Don't forget to take diflucan and/or nystatin. Nystatin is not for children I think, but it is known to stay in the gut and treat there.

These things helped me get through some years of terrible abdominal troubles.

Now, after doing bionic 880 for 3 weeks, I feel much better in the digestive system.

But that improvement only holds if I eat with my NEW eating habits. I am "in the Zone."

So that means no noodles, rice, potatoes, or other simple carbs. My only carbs come from fruit and vegees. This eating pattern has helped me so much.

Good luck.
