Has anyone ever taken either of these?

Probiotic Pearls by Integrative Therapeutics or

Acidophilus Pearls by Enzymatic Therapy

I read this article that says they are better because the coating protects them from stomach acid.

http://www.publichealthalert.org/Articles/JacobTeitelbaum/probiotics%20that%20work.htm

Currently we take Jarro-Dophilus EPS but unless I take like 4 per day it doesn't help much. I give my older son 4 also and my younger son 3. So it is costing me a ton of money each month!

Looking for something that works better so we can take less of them.

Anyone use these or have other recommendations?

Thanks!

They didn't work for me at all.

I'm not sure about using this for children- you'll have to check the label- but my personal favorite is Garden of Life's Defense ULTRA. 2nd. favorite is VSL#3 (have to order that latter online).

Good morning Amy,

I'm a pearl fan. Currently, I take one Enzymatic IC (intensive care) per day. Usually at bedtime. I've had rather intense gastro issues recently, so have also done the 'Emergency, fix-you-up, and keep-you-that-way', dissolving packets.

The plan is to step down to the basic pearls in another week, alternating back and forth then.

I really like these, as they are shelf-stable, compact and relatively inexpensive as compared to other products. I do have to say that my LLMD has advised me to get some sacharomyces boulardi in there too, which these do not contain... so, I think that is an important consideration for you.

I'm sorry, I have no info re: age appropriateness.

When I have traveled in the past I have used Enzymatic Therapy's Acidophilus pearls. They definitely work to prevent traveler's diarrhea. Other shelf stable products have not been as effective. They are expensive though considering the low dose. I only use these when traveling out of the country.

It might actually save you money if you switched to a higher potency probiotic like "Ultra Jarro Dophilus" 40billion per cap or "VSL#3" 112.5 billion per capsule. You all would only take one capsule at bedtime but you would be consuming a higher potency.

I took Pearls for the first year of my treatment and they worked fine. I then ended up switching, mostly because of cost not because they weren't working, because they worked fine when I used them.

The marketing term "Pearl" means that it is enteric coated which is good. That means that stomach acid can't eat away at it and it will open in your

intestines as opposed to your stomach, which is what it is ideally supposed to do.

I'm not commenting on this particular brand but on enteric coated probiotics. They are more effective in doing what they are supposed to do.

It's the same with enteric coated fish oils. Plus no burping up that nasty taste! These types of products are more bio -available.

Amy,

That particular brand only has one billion cultures, and that could be the reason why they are not working.

Some other products that are SO much more potent would be one like sammy mentioned or:

Megaflora by Megafoods, contains 20 billion live cultures and 15 strains. Renew Life Ultimate Flora CRITICAL CARE has 50 billion cultures and 10 strains.

These are carried in most health food stores. The most important thing to remember is refrigerated live cultures and high culture / high strain count.

NSI 15 - 35 has 15 strains and 35 billion cultures.

So you can see the difference in potency as to why the pearls are not working.

gemofnj is correct. You need multiple strains and counts in the billions when you are on ABX.

Those Pearls are for the average personal with no health issues and often prescribed to avoid travelers diarrhea .

Consider adding Saccharomyces boulardii, as well. It's antibiotic specific.

Anyone try Align yet? My gastro doc at NY Presbyterian-Cornell suggested I try it. I usually take a very high count and refrigerator type Acidop...but he said Align has "a different set of strains and has quite a bit of research behind it".
I just started it, so don't know yet.
Kind of pricey.

Right now I take Jarro-Dophilus EPS. It says 5 billion per capsule. I think it has 8 different types. It is enteric coated too.

It is room temp stable which I like because if they aren't in the med containers I forget. Plus if the kids go on overnights I don't have to worry about that.

The only problem is that we have to take so many of them. I saw that article that I posted above and wondered if these pearl coated ones would work better?

I will look into all the ones that are suggested too. Thanks!!

Amy,

What about Culturelle? That is what the famous
Ped. LLMD reccomends. I think you can get
it at Iherb.com or Vitacoast.

It is a powder so I am sure it is easy
to take for kids too. Or you can get empty
00 caps and fill them too. I believe this
one is shelf stable too.

BTW are you or the kids taking any Florastor
or S. Boulardii???? Most LLMD's have pts. take
it so that we do not get C. Diff.

if you are looking for non refrigerated probiotics, Dr. B recommends Prescript Assist Pro by Research Nutritionals, which is soil based and does not need refrigeration.

https://www.ResearchedNutritionals.com/store/item.cfm?code=CRN121&cat=5

I use this when I travel.

http://www.lymediseaseresource.com/BurrGuide2008.pdf

5 billion is way to low and not near enough to replenish good flora for a person on antibiotics.

its not just bout the number of cultures, its also about the strains. the higher the live cultures, minimum of 20 billion with more than 8 strains.

as ABXNOMORE says too: Saccharomyces boulardii is also helpful in addition to the refrigerated probiotic.

I bought those for Cody too; and they didn't work, then I realized they had such a little amount in them! I used them up by still giving them to him but have started him on Proboulardi, Florastor, and VS3, alternating a week of each.

He gets diarrhea if I miss a day.

Amy,

Here is a link for Saccharomyces boulardii. Florastor is the same thing, just a brand name.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saccharomyces_boulardii

When on heavy duty ABX it is well advised to take
Saccharomyces boulardii in addition to a good probiotic that is the refrigerated type that

contains many strains in the range of Millions two to three hours away from ABX and as often as you can fit it in given your ABX schedule. Two to

three times a day is ideal but not always doable.
