I have read that lemon juice/water can help with a herx, but what is the scientific reasoning behind it?

I wonder if a bioflavonoid supplement (lemon) would be a decent substitute? I believe limonene (from citrus fruits) can help with detox too, although no idea if it helps with a Lyme herx.

I see no logical reason for a doctor to dissuade use of probiotics while the patient is on antibiotics, unless he/she somehow feels supplements are unreliable. And in that case, the doctor should just prescribe VSL #3 DS. I'm actually surprised more Lyme people don't use it, as it's way stronger than OTC probiotics, and at a partial dose lasts a real long time. A single co-pay per month and you can get several months of probiotics, at a couple of hundred billion bacteria daily.

Oh, and don't overlook MK-7 (K2). It's good for nice strong bones and as a bonus may help keep your arteries clean too.

As far as the Lemon - doesn't it clean out the toxins? And therefore this helps with herxing?

My supplements:

Fish Oil
Vit C (except I ran out and keep forgetting it)
Olive Leaf
Probiotics
Magnesium
Calcium
Zinc
B-Complex

Seek, I'm not surprised to hear that a "mainstream" doctor told you that but don't believe him for one minute.

Especially the probiotics. If you think you have health issues now, without them you will end up with major intestinal dysbiosis and then Mr. Mainstream will fill you with drugs that do nothing but bring on worse side effects.

My advice to you is stay on your supplements and probiotics and stay away from mainstream doctors. They treat symptoms. Rarely do they look for the root cause of illness and most are clueless about supplements but would rather write scripts.

Good luck with that! My insurance coverage doesn't pay for ANY of the cost of VSL #3 even though it is supposed to be beneficial. Just 'cuz you have Rx coverage, doesn't mean you can get prescriptions at a discount.

Lemons are one of many things that help keep the body alkaline as opposed to acidic.

Bioflavonoids will not do the same thing.

Thanks for the lemon response. That makes sense. Although I am still wondering if limonene could help too, as it can help with stimulating detox enzymes.

As for VSL, insurance won't pay for the normal version, but sometimes will pay for the DS version. At least my insurance pays for that version. Worth checking, as if your insurance does cover it, it's a lot cheaper than OTC probiotics.
