I don't trust Quackwatch. It seems too vehement to anything that is an alternative therapy.

I'm sorry, but mercury in the mouth is not a good thing. The debate is if mercury fillings are actually leeching into the body. Most common dentists think not and they will offer to remove them if you don't want them in. Where holistic dentists may provide an advantage is they supposedly take greater care in making sure no mercury is left in the mouth and swallowed when removing the fillings.

Most holistic dentists are still just dentists and have gone through all of the same training. They just believe in a mercury-free mouth.

For me personally, I still have some mercury fillings and wonder if it's a contributing factor to ny health problems. I would love to see a holistic dentist, but they are not covered under normal insurance.

I've got a few small amalgams that I'm comfortable leaving in for now but I'm pretty sure one of my larger amalgam fillings has a crack in it(or the tooth surrounding it does).

It's probably about 30 years old and I've been having some off and on pain in that area. I'm also seeing what appears to be a crack.

My significant other is a dentist and wants to remove it and replace it with a bonded composite.

He is a very good dentist and no longer does amalgam fillings on his patients. Problem is, he feels that high speed suction and water alone are safe enough when removing amalgam fillings. I'm not so sure about this.

I guess I'd like to find a holistic dentist to remove and replace the filling. Although, I do trust significant other and know he does good work. Decisions.

Don't know which way to go yet but this tooth is really starting to hurt on some days and something needs to be done.

My holistic dentist charged the same price as my regular dentist for amalgam filling removal...but had all the precautions in place so I would not absorb any of the fumes, tested me to see which of the many replacement filling substances I was compatable with, and tested me to see how long I needed chlorella pre and post removal to bind what was absorbed...as always some mercury is absorbed internally!!! Regular dentist did not offer that...so I went with the biological dentist! Why risk more problems with metals moving to a new location in your body?

I saw pretty immediate sympton reduction of brain fog, and saw loads of white candida appear on my gums the weeks following that I addressed. I felt so mentally clear for the first time in many years. I sent my lyme friend/neighbor, who has the same great response. She had been rifing candida for years...with very small improvements...now she rifes with ease and gets loads of candida out...and feels fantastic mentally!

Removal of those particular amalgams led to my body naturally removing candida and started the rebalancing I am enjoying today. I highly recommend removal to kick start your healing!

ditto what LP says. There is no way I believe that a high speed drill, suction and water are enough.

My dentists "mercury removal room" looks like a Haz-Mat site. Huge suction hose going into a toxic waste container, oxygen supply for patient(nose), rubber dam, charcoal under the tongue, special netting over patients head, and she wears what looks like a gas mask.

I was also tested for compatible replacement materials. Some composites are toxic for some people.

There is a lot of information to be found on safe removal. You will find many of these things mentioned.

I'm with LP, and NanaDubo, getting mercury amalgams out is essential to getting well imo and my experience. I believe it was crucial in my getting well.

Along with Six here's Dr. Ray Sahelian's (who I have infinitely more respect for) assessment of Dr. of psychiatry Stephen (yes he's probably a troll for insurance companys AMA and a host of govt agencies) Barrett.

I think there are a couple of websites that help you search for "holistic dentists", or perhaps a better term is "mercury-free dentist". Try this one:
