I have had this and in my case it was related to my TMJ. Never had it before lyme but comes and goes now. I also had a fluttering noise in my ears-almost like there were butterflies in my ears.

I posted this very same thing recently. I can only hear it when I'm going to be in a quiet room, but also could hear it while awake with a stethescope to my head.
I had a Dr. Listen to it, and he order another MRI, which of course showed nothing.
What I hear I can only best describe in a few ways:
1. If you go under water in a bath tub and leave the water running, it's kind of like the sound of the water hitting the water you would hear while being under the water.
2. Try and put your fingers in your ears and see what you hear, as I can hear it this way too.
3. It's kind of like a rumbling sound for me and not so much a clicking sound. My goes way faster than any heart rate.
Was wondering if you have any vertiog or disequilibrium as I do and not sure if it is related or not.
Still don't know what it is.

- Can you see a LL ear specialist? Can your LLMD refer you?
Be sure to avoid steroids if offered (even as a nasal mist).
If you might have any sort of break or problem with your eardrum, you should not immerse your ear in water - it could cause infection.
The popping can be pressure form an infection. Sometimes, infections can rupture ear drums. You do not want add more pressure from being underwater.
I would also not try to force any pressure through your ears - no blowing up of balloons, etc. However, you might try very gentle breathing exercises.
And a "neti pot" to clear sinuses. You can search that on Google and see videos at You Tube. Clean water with just a little sea salt dissolved.
Now, popping - ringing - hissing - whirring - fluttering --- all can happen with lyme. It could be blocked Eustachian tubes - could be inflammation. And ear troubles often go along with lyme but this could just be a minor blip on the screen for you (I hope).
First, be sure you have good body mechanics when awake and asleep.
Add GINGER capsules
and be sure your MAGNESIUM is at a good level (1,000 - 2,000 mg a day up to bowel tolerance). Magnesium can help decrease clinking if from muscle tightness. It also helps calm down inflammation and irritated nerve ending. And it helps with the liver.
But you will need more liver support, too, as the ears are the first things to detect toxins. That is why liver support is vital to lyme treatment.
Are you able to get some movement with walking, gentle weigh lifting or Tai Chi sort of movement? Any of this can help with circulation.
Also, avoiding all dairy, corn and wheat may help as they all create phlegm that can act as a sort of glue to the ear system.
Be sure to avoid chemicals and perfumed products. You could have some sort of allergy or chemical sensitivity and the ears always get on board for that.
As lyme987 mentioned above, TMJ can be causing this. The magnesium can help with that but also cranial-sacral therapy. GENTLE, though.
It does say it can be the result of an infection.

I just had a really bad episode of vertigo this weekend, and then today my ear started doing about what you're describing.
I told my hhusband it was like someone was inside my ear tapping on my eardrum, and I couldn't hear right out of that ear, plus I was starting to feel anxious and spacy.
No idea what it is, but I had a cold last week, and there was a significant weather change today, so I'm hoping that's all it was.
