I've been having a heck of a time with my tongue. It's so sore! Feels burnt. On the tip the taste buds are all inflamed and red. Its kinda furry whitish color. Not really white just kinda and looks furred. At the very back I have a white sore on it. The sore is somewhat new and has been there a few weeks.
What exactly causes a furred tongue? It was in my LLMD notes that my tongue was slightly furred. I'd never even heard of that before. I've read that stomach problems can cause tongue problems. But honestly, that is the only part of my body that seems to be running normally. Also I don't think it's yeast either, I had the pain before starting abx.
Could it just be caused from lyme? Why? Does anyone else get this?
This and the dizziness and horrible brain fog have been plagueing me the past several days. I hate brain fog.

yeast and thrush, OH HOW PAINFUL! I had that once and my tongue cracked. Everything I put in my mouth hurt. I got it from Sulpha drugs more than 20 years ago. I had it for months until it went away on its own. I was too young and stupid to go back to the Dr. I chewed Vit C tablets and it seemed to take it away. Be sure to tell your Dr. Maybe Diflucan might help it.

If it's white, it probably is candida, so you will need to follow a no sugar or yeast diet, take high dose probiotics and perhaps a yeast-digesting supplement such as Candida Yeast management by NSI [vitacost].
I had a very sore tongue earlier on with my rusting amalgams and for many years with being ill, there is furring , though in my case it's usually yellowish.

A furry/hairy tongue could also be caused by having a dry mouth. Many medications cause dryness.
The sore on the back of the tongue makes me think that you may also be developing a fungal inf. You may want to let your doctor know about this.

I would guess thrush (yeast) is causing this. You can try Nystatin or diflucan. I have heard that the yeast can happen when your immune system gets compromised from lyme.
One LLMD told me that sometimes during abx treatment, the yeast resolved b/c the immune system became stronger. So you can definitely have yeast before stating abx.
Why not try a few of days of nystatin or diflucan to see what happens?

They also make clotrimazole lozenges you place in
mouth and let dissolve for mouth infection. If you
were dehydrated it should be brown and furry not
white. But you still need to push the fluids. I
have done both. Now just diflucan. If you have it
bad you may feel better starting low ans slow.

Thanks. It's not sore except on the tip. The tip burns horribly and is really red and taste buds are inflamed. The white is kinda tinted yellowish... I've showed my reg MD and my llmd and neither said anything except, "hmmmmm". No one said anything about yeast. My LLMD put me on high dose b12 meth. and said it may help with it.... but it hasn't.
I was reading about furred tongue last night on the internet and it said sometimes occurs in infectious diseases such as HIV and Syphillis. Well I don't have either of these, but I would think that if it happens in these it could certainly happen in lyme.
But if it isn't yeast, what else causes this. I think I have some diflucan (2 doses). Should I try this and see what happens?

When my kids really started to show symptoms right before treatment, two of them complained of their tongue hurting for several days. Then it went away.
I did treat them with liquid nystatin, but they didn't really appear to have thrush. I think it is possible that the pain is a symptom of lyme/coinfections.

i am sorry your tongue is really sore. it sounds like yeast!
there are probiotics you actually put on tongue to temporarily kill it.
when your tongue clears up its important to brush your tongue well to clear off yeast and then dipping your toothbrush in bleach to disinfect it EACH time you use it. Rinse well with water. You can also use liquid grapefruit seed extract.
it would be a good idea to increase your probiotics. what kind are you taking?
Megaflora from Megafoods is a good brand or NSI 15-35 is excellent but you may need VSL#3, which is very powerful at 450 billion cultures per serving.
are you taking any antifungals? they KILL yeast.
have you been following an anti-yeast diet? (no sugar / no carbs)

I've had tongue symptoms since early on, well before any dx or tx.
So...yes, it may be yeast for me, but I don't think so. I've had everything from numbness, burning, buzzing, soreness and tremoring with my tongue (and other places too, of course, ugh). IMO, for me, I think it's caused from Lyme and company due to cranial nerve irritation.
My tongue is better, but still not right...like right now it's slightly numb or like I slightly burned it.
Do you get any other facial symptoms? I have facial numbness at times, facial vibration feelings....again, I chalk this up to the infections messing with my cranial nerves....for me, IMO.
TBD's are certainly know to irritate the cranial nerves. Then again, it could be yeast...aahhhh!

I have a white furry tongue, too. Days when my symptoms are the most horrific, usually the edges (only) of my tongue are beet red, and the rest of it bears a thick white coating, sometimes with a yellow tint to it. Also, the taste buds (only on the front tip) are all inflammed.
I'm not so sure it is yeast though, and if it is, I doubt it is candida - must be some other type. If anything, eating yogurt containing acidophilis only makes things worse. By worse I mean that within minutes of eating this, my teeth start to develop a thick coating of tartar, even if I brush my teeth right away.
On the other hand, if I eat Activia, I'm not sure the Activia helps my tongue all that much (maybe a tiny bit - I have to pay attention more next time I eat it), but at least I don't get instant tartar.
Are there any other types of yeast we should be worried about?
I notice that if I swoosh peroxide around my mouth when this happens the bubbles start popping like crazy.

Well I see I'm not alone. This is making me crazy! It's horrible. I'm not so sure it's yeast either. I think it may be part of the disease... Don't know. It is definately worse when I'm flaring. Today I'm feeling horrible and my tongue is burning and feels so weird. Doe any of you feel like it is dry kinda... I do.. and sometimes feels like the inside of my mouth is dryish. But when I look I have normal amounts of saliva.. It is very bothersome.
You know when a dog has his head hanging out the window and their mouth gets all dry and their lips stick to their teeth... haha... that's how I feel sometimes!!!

One thing I've noticed is that when my tongue is sore along with the white furriness, I don't hear any gallbladder sounds. Makes me think the tongue gets sore because toxins are flowing back into the bloodstream due to the lack of gallbladder activity.
Pay attention to whether you hear gurgling on your right side at night. I'll bet the soreness/furriness decreases once you hear the gurgles. Mine always does, though I've yet to find a way to speed the gallbladder up and make it gurgle when this happens.
