thats why i'm asking here/
we saw the vet today about something else
no vet can figure out why he pants for no reason
i realized he might be having hot flashes like i get from babs
there is a test for canine babs but the doc didn't know what tx would be...he thoguht doxy(???)
he said there were alternative vets who use chinese herbs for dogs and it got me thinking
i thought someone here might have already gone thru this
he's also full of nodules so i think he has bart too
we're twins: lyme, bart and babs

Ip, Google 'artemisinin for dogs' and you'll get a lot of hits (mostly for treating cancer so you might want to revise your search).
Does your dog ever have an elevated temperature at the vet's?

no high temp-but he pants for no reason...when it is cool, no thunder around...etc
it reminds me of flushes i get and blame on babs
he was having trouble (gi) with vet drugs for arthritis
online i saw to use aspirin and ppl cosamine
he does really well on that so i am curious about the art
i need to find dosage tho
i need an alternative vet site-i will ty to find it but i'm having trouble-when he is sick it makes extra work for me

Ip, I didn't have much luck searching either. However, I did find something you might be interested in. This place carries herbal and homeopathic combination remedies for treating cats, dogs, and horses. I'm NOT suggesting or recommending anything that they have or use, but they do have a product for treating tickborne diseases........
Interestingly, one of the homeopathic ingredients in their product was used alone in a study of dogs with Babesiosis in India..... and it cured all the dogs. I actually posted about it here at LN some time back.
I wouldn't use any of these homeopathic products for too long - like maybe 3 weeks and stop, see how things are.

We gave my friend's dog Artemisinin to his dog that had Leishmaniasis after consulting with the vet. We gave him the one from Nutricology, one capsule a day (200mg). The dog improved and his ulcerations healed.

Panting for seemingly no reason was one of the symptoms that our dog had -- along with what seemed like IBD. We worried about pain causing that panting reaction. Dog will pant when they are in pain.
We took our dog to Corte Madera Pet Hospital and they sent a blood sample to a specialty lab for tick borne diseases in canines.
Although it hadn't shown up in the common tests that vets do in their offices, this lab found that our dog had extremely high titres for lyme. He also tested positive for Bartonella and Rocky Mountain spotted fever though not for Babesia.
He was treated by the vet with doxy but his symptoms remained and so did the positive titres. Our kind lyme md got in touch with a vet that specialized in tickborne diseases. Our dog was put on a combination of bicillin and zithromax and he now appears (knock on wood) symptom free.
The director of Igenex is wonderful and knows a lot about treatments and disease in animals. He helped us with proper information when our cat had Bart. What works in cats often doesn't work in dogs and I'm pretty sure you can't assume that herbs for humans work for dogs. I would call Igenex.

Sorry, lpkayak, My post wasn't clear. Igenex doesn't test dogs as far as I know but the Dr. knows a lot about lyme in animals
He may have the answers you want about your dog.
I hope so. He was a big help to us.

sammi-sorry-i'll fix it-i've had the flu for 4 days ..getting better now
oyvey-ok. whats IBD? i wonder if my vet knows the specialty lab to send the test to...is it possible for you to call them and give me the name and number? or is it on any paperwork you have? thanks.
my dog still pants. but he has been leaking urine and i didn't know if it was a bladder infect or organ failure(thats what one of the techs said it could be-and it freaked me out) or what.
he is "wobbly" from some sort of nerve compression on spinal cord near lumbar(if dogs have lumbar-but close to tail)
the urine leaks would come and go so i assumed it was related to the neuro prob
i give him aspirin and cosamine and he is pretty happy and doesn't seem to be in pain-he really wants his walks-way more than i can give him. i have someone else take him for a long walk everyday and when i can i go to a large parking lot and drive around it letting him "lead me" trotting on the long leash.
anyway-the doc said we could try a med:proin and it seems to be working. he also seems happier - he was sort of depressed or lethargic when leaking badly. so that part of him is better-but i would like to test him for babs and bart...he always tests pos for lyme.
but since babs and bart tx are different than doxy i'd like to check them out

IBD is inflamatory bowel disease, our dog was rapidly losing weight and we were afraid he would die.
I am so sorry about your dog, and I will try to get the name the number of the lab for you. Igenex may know a good lab for blood work for animals.
