well i supposed to leave this morning but after yesterday and last night, we postponed it until tomorrow (maybe).

I had skim milk for breakfast yesterday and a couple of bites of plain chicken and rice. that's all.

i felt nauseous and went to be early about 8. at 11:00 i woke up sweating and doubleovered in pain.

looking down it's my right side right under the rib. it felt like someone was kicking me, jerky spasms and the pain radiated all over my abdomen and went through to my back.

i was not vomiting nor did have diahhea.

i was sweating and chilly at the same time. i woke mike up, boy, and he was one unhappy camper. i told i was going myself and he started but he finally gave in and took me to the er.

luckily there was not one person there cause mike was yelling about the flue and all.

they took my blood pressure and it was 237 over 193!!! boy, that got their attention. they put me in a room immediately. by this time it's 12:30. they took 4 vials of blood.

then i sat until 2. a nurse came in and gave me morphine, zofran, and levasin.

the morphin made me really ill and then i got sick. had a humongous headache.

then the doc came in and said well it's your gallbladder. i said uh i don't have one. so he finally said well i don't know what it is, maybe ibs. i just gritted my teeth. he then said well some people get bile duct spasms and that could be it.

so i left at 3:30 with a prescription for vicodin, bentyl, prevacid and phernagan.

we slept until 10 this morning and then went and got the prescriptions.

i still have the terrible headache and all.

i did not mention lyme because it just makes things worse.

could it have been a herx? pancreas? stomach?

i still can't eat anything but crackers and water, otherwise i'm doubled over and off to the toliet.

the pain is unimaginable. i've never had pain this bad.

just since saturday i've lost 2 pounds.

got any suggestions?

i'm one sick puppy....ugh

no i didn't because he's out of town.

i'm also concerned about being diabetic. i spoke to my one sister and guess what? she's now diabetic. mom and dad both were.

she told me her symptoms were: unexplained abdominal spasms, dry or sweating feet, dry mouth, severe headaches, sick after eating, and i've got most of those symptoms.

i'm going to try and talk my primary into at least doing a blood test for diabetes. don't know what it is, but it shouldn't be too hard.

yeah, i was freaking out because it was so high. even the nurse said to the male nurse when he took me back "man, she's freaking high. i'm surprised she's not stroking." oh great, encouraging...

i forgot to say my heart rate was 129!!!

How scary. Did they test your blood sugar while you were there?

About two years back, my significant other, who is a type I diabetic, had similar symptoms and I ended up calling 911. He was doubled over with severe pains. He could barely breathe in by the time they got there.

Anyway, long story short, his blood sugar ended up being off the charts. I guess he was only a smidgen away from a diabetic coma and ended up being in the hospital for nearly a week.

Not saying this to scare you, just comparing the symptoms possibly linked to diabetes and high blood sugar and suggesting you may be on to something in mentioning that.

Hopefully it's a fluky thing that won't happen again. Feel better!

They should have given you some nitroglycerine under your tongue or maybe an IV of a blood pressure med to lower your blood pressure. Can't believe they didn't do something for your b.p. The headache could definitely be caused by your high b.p.

Do you have a fever also?

The only thing I can think of that might help short term is a castor oil pack over the liver area.

Do you know what your fasting glucose is on your routine bloodwork? A diabetes diagnosis would be based on that and also fasting insulin and a special test called a glucose tolerance test (may last 3 - 5 hours).

To me your symptoms do not sound like diabetes. You could easily have insulin resistance, but that would have the same symptoms as hypoglycemia.

Please get a copy of your bloodwork from the ER for your records. I always request copies before I let them discharge hubby. If the ER doc will cooperate there is no charge where otherwise sometimes medical records will charge for copies.

Unless you requested it I would be surprised if the ER checked your pancreatic enzymes. Hubby did have elevated pancreatic enzymes once from an antibiotic and his LLMD had him stop the med until the enzymes returned to normal. You definitely want to rule out pancreatitis as that can be very serious.

Try to get those medical records tomorrow and if you still feel so bad maybe you could go to an urgent care facility and have them run the test for pancreatic enzymes and recheck anything such as liver enzymes or WBC that may have been abnormal.

Let us know how things are going.

yikes, see where my mind is -- yes, i did have a fever also. it was almost 100...something about 99.6 i think he said.

the doctor did specifically say he was testing for pancreatitis, but the enzyme levels were within normal ranges, so he ruled that out.

never been tested for diabetes and i've told my primary about family history numerous times.

but i understand you can have it and your enzyme levels don't rise...

Wow, randibear, I feel for you.

I've been having some weird abdominal pains lately too, but I can't pin them down to anything I'm eating or whatever.

Mine feel like gas pains and can start anywhere, but they end up being my whole abdominal region and sometimes into my back.

My gall bladder is gone too, so I know that's not it.

Sometimes my temp is slightly elevated with it, but nothing really severe.

For me the pain gets so bad I can't move, unless I take in a deep breath and hold it, squeezing down. That seems to dull the pain enough to move.

I don't know what it is, but I do know I want it to stop!

Hope you feel better soon and find out what it is!

Hi there.
If you were able to get your blood work check the WB and RB cell counts. I had episodes like this every year for 4 years in a row a few years ago.

i would have to call 911 or a family member would call. I swear it felt like a snake was inside of me and the spasms and pain were worse than labor.

I did not know I had lyme at the time and i was not treated very well at the hospital even so. I was admitted two of the times when they saw my cell counts way off and it indicated infection. They still could not figure out what it was and what the cause was.

They NEVER did diagnose me officially with anything.

I ended up getting Antibiotics via IV til my cell counts were normal and my PCP at the time just said it is an obvious abdominal infection of some sort.

It was the most horrible pain and the times the Ambulance had to come I remember many 30 seconds total of the whole ordeal because I would be passed out in pain.

It hit just like you described just abruptly and hard and without warning.

I wish I could help you know what it was but I would suspect an intestinal infection.

Do you have any bowel issues such as slow balls palsy of the gut? Is your system very slow? I ended up on my own being convinced that at times due to my illness and pain killers on top of it that my gut digested slower than normal giving it time to create problem and infections in there.

Since then I have very much concentrated on diet and as well when I have to I will take things like Mirilax or softners (not laxitives that stimuliate)

Since then i have not had another bought of it.

Anyway.. Just an idea if relate..
You also could have just caught an intestinal bug that hit hard and abruptly like that.

I think they should have checked more things out for you but I also was discharged with notes that said "abdominal pain" "unknown cause"

Hope your doing better now.

Sure could be something with the bile duct. Did they ever do an MRI of it? I think it's called and MRCP.. can't remember for sure.

You could have a stone in the duct.

So they did nothing about your BP?? Did it come back down?? Pain will make heart rate and BP get high.

I hope you can postpone the trip a few more days!

HUGS to you! [group hug]

yeah, that's what they called it. "upper abdominal pain of unknown origin"....er whatever....

he did say white and red cell counts were good.

they sent me home and said, "well if something happens, come back...."

when i left my bp was still 152 over 90 something and my heart rate had gone down to the 80's.

nope, they didn't do ANY tests, nada, none, zilch.

he did say to go to a gastro cause there c9ould be problems with the bilary system.

i don't think so.

oh no you misunderstand. i agree with him....

i was saying that my "gastro" and i use that term loosely will not test for anything else. he's done ct scans, upper and lower gi series, barium scans, x-rays, colonscopy, endoscopy, mri's, mrcp, etc.,

going to him is a big waste of time.

i've got to find a new doc.

i was saying it's the ole "must be ibs" syndrome that most docs use when they can't identify an abdominal disorder.

did you know it takes an average of 7-10 years to diagnose pancreatitis or sphincter of oddi disfunction?

i'm at my limit on that.

1. Sphincter of Odi dysfunction. The Sphincter of Odi is just outside the gallbladder and if it spasms, it can mimic a gallbladder attack. People who continue to have symptoms after the gallbladder often have this problem. There are anti-spasm medications that can control the symptoms. They can actually test for this by an endoscopy, but not if you have pancreas problems.

2. Pancreatitis. If you have had pancreas problems for a long time, the enzymes normalize. Pancreatitis may have existed for a while and been misdiagnosed as gallbladder.

3. Spams of the small intestine.

4. Dairy intolerance. I'd cut out dairy for at least 2 weeks and see how you feel. Make sure you cut out butter, anything with lactose or whey in it.

Add in the possibility of gluten intolerance.

Yes, definitely find a new gastro!

Pancreatitis can cause incredible pain.

ERCP I think is the procedure to check for a stone

That may be in the common bile duct.

Sending prayers your way.

Randibear - I feel your pain - literally, I've been having attacks like that since my gb came out. I just saw a gastro today, and suggested SOD to him; he said some people don't believe it's a real thing.

Anyway - we ran blood work to check pancreatic and liver enzymes, and I'm having an MRCP next week. He suspects a stone stuck in my ductwork. If they see a stone, they'll do an ERCP to get it out.

I"m so sorry you're having such a hard time. The pain I've had hasn't sent me to ER; I can't imagine how awful it would be to have that much pain of "unexplained origin."

It sucks to KNOW something is wrong, and to not have a name for it. Hang in there, and let us know how you do.

Sorry you are doing so bad. With a BP like that I would suspect vascular problems. Possibly arterial spasms or along those lines? I have not read about cases other than brain arterial vasculitis but I don't see why it could not be other sites as well and may be why so many of us have hard times with our hands and feet. A mix.

I went to a GI doc and had ALL those tests too and he found NOTHING wrong. And I still have no name for it.

But like I said I feel it s an infection that bursts into the gut and is part of this Lyme Disease and our immune systems are not right so we can not fight off what we should. Our GI systems are weak and sluggish.

If I were you i would concentrate on the Digestion. Make sure you have movements no matter what. Take Fibers or softeners or prune juice or anything that makes you regular and frequent.

Things have to MOVE along and us with this disease have to watch closer than others.

I would have them pull up all tests each time I ended up in the ER and they still called it the same thing and scratched their heads.

I can tell you that with my GI concentration and hard work i have not had it happen again. That must account for something ? Right?

I am assuming as I get better the GI system will also get back on track and work more normally.

I also have detox issues and the GI track is the biggest immune system spot and place where we have to watch for absorbtion of what we are killing back into the walls of the lining and into our blood again.

IBS .. I guess you can call it that.. Leaky Gut... I think it is curable in time but it takes constant and daily hard attention and work on diet and what you put in your body and timing of the system.

Give it a shot and you have nothing to lose.... and everything to gain. Sometimes the doctors just can not figure it out. They do not know it all. That is for sure.

I have given up on expecting them to give me a diagnosis or tell me what is wrong or why it is happening.

I got some books on the GI track and it is detailed about the system and the timing and why it does what it does and when.
And it is written by a doctor who gives step by step instructions on how to correct it. I do not have the name in front of me. It was actually one of those PBS special doctors who sold a kit and lectured on the Public Broadcast an you could buy it through the channel. It is a good kit and helped me a ton.

Anyway.. I am not saying I know for sure what your issue is but It sure sounds very familiar. And I know what it like to have stumped doctors but feel so horrible and scared and frustrated.

Take care.. I hope it gave you some ideas anyway to give some mental attention to.. and then... maybe it might help too.

Take care..
Feel better

Randibear I am so sorry you are going through this!!!

For regularity eating oatmeal each morning works wonders.

For blood sugar questions... Keep an eye on the drugstore ads. We got a Blood Sugar monitor for free and it comes with some strips to get you started. You have to purchase and get a rebate, so it' is money up front.

They are willing to give you the meter as the strips are so expensive, but it's a low cost way to be able to monitor yourself for awhile and worked well for us.

Then if you have sugar issues you can research which system is most cost effective.

Keeping you in prayer. Take care of yourself!

Randibear I am a firm believer in vitamin E for cleaning the vascular pipes. It is well documented in medical literature its abilities to reduce cholesterol and I would not hesitate to use it here just in case. I take it.

Randibear:

Spent 4 days in hospital with pancreatitis about 3 years ago. Some small stones were seen in the gallbladder.

For about 3 years before the attack, was on all the hard stuff for pain at various times (various opioids, and opiates including morphine).

After leaving the hospital, found the following excerpts in the insert for oxycodone:

"Oxycodone may cause spasm in the sphincter of Oddi ...".

"Oxycodone may cause increases in the serum amylase level."

Serum amylase is one of the tests to confirm pancreatitis.

Showed the insert to my Dr. who immediately took me off the pain meds in question. Note that she had put me on the meds with no idea of this particularly serious side effect. To make matters even worse, she had put me on morphine upon admission to the hospital.

Just a note of caution to anyone taking opiates or opioids.
