hey all, I am having severe joint/muscle pain. shoulders hips, knees and hamstrings. my question is: does it cause damage to use these joints and muscles, or is it good to push through the pain and use them?

I know only what I do--and I tend to push through when I can and I have read that a little exercise/muscle resistance is good even if you can only manage 2 minutes a day to start. Personally I think the body needs to move if at all possible to keep lymphs cleared and help move this bad stuff out. Best to you in your journey! Kitty

I don't believe it damages the joints to use them. In fact, I believe the opposite to be true. That's why they give "squeezy balls" to people with RA in their hands.
Have you tried aquatic exercise? It doesn't hurt when you do it, so there is no pain to push through. You also don't tend to hurt after either.

- I think it is best to see a LLMD to determine which joints and when.
There are times when exercise can hurt joints and tendons if they have been damaged and need to rest. And there are other times when gentle exercise helps. But you need your LLMD to examine you and guide you.

The trick is to take things slow and easy. Don't over work your body or that can cause trouble. Definitely do stretching and weights, but not more pounds, do more reps instead. Swimming is good for painful joints too.

thanks all, i started having this pain about 3 months ago, sudden with no injury or trauma or overuse. it started in my shoulders and spread symetrically through hips, bi ceps hamstrings and now knees. it is severe and very debilitating. I had a battery of tests for arthritis (all normal) a lyme titer (negative) x rays- (normal) My wife is an RN who helped me research this out and came to the conclusion of lyme. I started on doxy...100 mg 2x a day 1 week ago tuesday. i felt better for a little while and now am getting my a** kicked by this stuff. is it HERX? if so how long can i expect it to last? there are no LLMD's in my area taking new patients, i would love to go to one. thanks again everybody and best wishes to you all.

Your joint symptoms are probably due to sero-NEG rheumatoid arthritis if you did not test with a positive SED rate.
My rheumy dx'd. me with sero-NEG RA and I take 2 injections a week of Enbrel. Most people with true RA do well on one injection. My joints are deterioating quickly, I need total knee replacement and both jaws.
The joint issues are typical of chronic lyme or so in my case.
The physical therapist I work with has me to exercise sitting on the sofa so my spine is supported. Also has me lie on the bed to do leg lifts, move my hips from side to side, etc., and it has helped.
A heating pad has helped my hands, I just wrap it around both hands and get relief.
Prayers coming your way.
