That is very interesting. Thanks for posting this. I am not using grapefruit seed extract but I know a lot of people here are. I have thought about buying some at some point myself so this is good info to have.
Thanks! Pam :-)

Sources of GSE that don't have this problem will mention it on at least their website. I used Nutribiotic, and it's supposed to be a good brand.
I would also like to know who paid for the study.

Quite interesting. Great thanks for the link. Especially this part :
quote: In only one of the grapefruit seed extracts tested no preservative agent was found. However, with this extract as well as with several self-made extracts from seed and juiceless pulp of grapefruits (Citrus paradisi), no antimicrobial activity could be detected. Thus, it is concluded that the potent as well as nearly universal antimicrobial activity being attributed to grapefruit seed extract is merely due to the synthetic preservative agents contained within. Natural products with antimicrobial activity do not appear to be present.''
So I guess I better stick with standard abx!. Albeit the preservative in question appears not all that toxic - LD 50 is quite high

Yep- I use the nutribiotic brand too. I see a naturopath who tested everything she recommends, and she said only by the nutribiotic/citricidal GSE.

Now if there was some research showing the effectiveness of this "citricidal" agent -aside from this site, which sells it!
The OP study mentions that there was one GSE product without benzethonium chloride. Only one problem though -it didn't exhibit any bactericidal effects.

This situation has been going on for awhile. It's become evident that there was "smearing" going on.

I called the mfr appr. three years ago, and somehow managed to get through to a technical mgr who explained away my concerns about this. I spoke with this patient person for appr 20 minutes, as I recall. I may or may not have the emails or notes, but it's clear that the smear campaign continues...relentlessly.
A Japan study was done in the 90s, then sponsored by the DOA that may have started this mess:

Does anyone know if GSE is also effective against viruses? Am wondering if I should start it again to protect against swine flu.
