KANDAHAR, Afghanistan | U.S. military officials sent a medical team to a remote outpost in southern Afghanistan this week to take blood samples from members of an Army unit after a soldier in the unit died from an Ebola-like virus.

Dr. Jim Radike, an expert in internal medicine and infectious diseases at the Role 3 Trauma Hospital at Kandahar Air Field, told The Washington Times that Sgt. Robert David Gordon, 22, from River Falls, Ala., died Sept. 16 from what turned out to be Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever after he was bitten by a tick. The virus is transmitted by infected blood and can be carried by ticks, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Dr. Radike, who is with the Navy, said the medical team "will be taking blood samples and the results may take several weeks to get back." He called it "a precautionary measure."

Dr. Radike did not say how many individuals would be tested or why the military had waited until now to act. The unit involved is the 5th Stryker Brigade, 2nd Infantry division, A-Company 2-1 Infantry.

Sounds like what they are calling H1N1 in the

Ukraine. Ebola like. Hemorrhagic fever. I guess we

have to wait and see what they can come up with.

They are locking the region down and reports of

planes spraying something. Anyone have any ideas what

that would be? I had no idea there were that many people in the Ukraine. 49,506,000

Just brought my dog to the vets last week.... Dog was vomiting up blood and passing blood in it's stool. She also had a fever. Vet said it was a virus that causes a dog gastro to hemorrhage.

Hospitalized her, IVs & 4 different meds, she's home now and better.

Ok, so not lyme, but wondering if connected? My other dog has lyme disease.

Presidential Address to obey.

If this new thing turned out to be plague,

it is most likely a water source. Many have no

access to clean water. And many places ration

running water. I would hope all the ticks don't

carry congo fever.

http://fto.co.za/news/new-strain-swine-flu-ukraine-swine-flu-h1n1-might-have-mutated-pneumonic-plague-2009110615731.h

South African News Report.

he first deputy minister of Health in Ukraine said in a statement that they have a different

h1n1 swine flu than the rest of the world and US. In 6 days 500 000 people have been infected,

93 confirmed deaths. Statements from a lot of departments and officials seem to disagree but

the fact is that if this is the h1n1 it might of either mutated or this is another swine flu strain

Please note. The h1n1 and the viral pneumonic

plague is two different things. What we are

saying is that either the h1n1 has mutated OR

there is a viral pneumonic outbreak at the same

scale of the h1n1.
