I am trying to do without rye bread now as well as wheat to see if it reduces inflammation [ and severe bloating in the upper abdomen].

I bought some cold-pressed, organic flax meal that is well- sealed and in opaque bags] and yesterday made a couple of recipes from the Web [muffins and crackers].

This morning I tried a hot cereal recipe with it for breakfast and it was really filling and warming [1/4 C. flax meal, 2 Tab. nut butter, 1/4 teasp. cinnamon +1/2 C boiling water, Xylitol to taste...stir and leave for a couple of minutes to thicken].

Is anybody else using flax meal and finding it helpful? Any tips?

I'd like to know what your results are!

I used quite a bit of flax meal years ago. I put it on cereal and also in "protein shakes". Never got fancy enough to try to cook with it though.

I enjoyed it... and probably should still be using it.

There are a lot of gluten-free grains that you can have in moderation at any meal. Any of these, or a combination make a nice hot porridge, are great added to soups or as a side dish.

If you like, you can add little flax meal to any of these, just blend in right before serving.

Amaranth; Quinoa ("keen-wa"); Millet; Buckwheat (really a legume); Wild Rice (really a grass); and many varieties of brown, red and black rices.

If Xylitol causes any bloating (which it can, especially as the flax seed meal is a bulking agent) you might try using STEVIA instead. It's a powered form from a plant rather than a processed sugar alcohol like Xylitol. As long as you don't overdo it, Xylitol should not be too bloating but it is is a fine line so it's good just to know that.

Also, since that much flax meal (1/4 c) is a bulking agent, it is probably best not to take your medicines at the same time as you consume flax as when the flax swells and become gelatinous in your GI tract it may absorb the medicines.

Be sure to drink LOTS of water all through the day when you use flax meal so that constipation does not occur. LOTS of water.

You can also just mix flax with water and drink it down.

Most rye bread has wheat in it, too, so if you're sensitive to wheat you might want to try a brown rice bread. [Smile] Plus, rye has gluten.

My sister has a great flax muffin/bread(loaf) recipe.

I've made pizza crust with flaxmeal as well. It was pretty good. Don't have enough energy to put that much effort into cooking nowadays though.

If you are eating low-glycemic, lower-carb, you may want to steer toward coconut flour and almond flour.

Thanks for all your comments and tips.

22dreams, I'm glad to be reminded of coconut flour, as last time I looked into it, I couldn't get hold of it easily in UK, but now a few places sell it here, I see. I saw the pizza crust recipe and may try it sometime!

Sixgoofy, I stopped wheat, dairy and a few other things in 2003 before I knew about the Lyme because of candida and intolerances. My kiniesiologist over that year found that I tested OK for oats, rye + non-gluten grains, including rice. I've been eating smallih amounts of a really good rye only bread since then [with occasional wheat sins]

I decided to give rye, oats and rice a miss [except in small amounts of rice milk] for a while in case I was over-using them, to try a low carb plan for Lyme and also in
an attempt [probably vain, usually is!] to drop some weight.

I also wanted to see if the carbs were related to the bloating. Keebler, thanks for the warning about Xylitol and bloating, by the way.

I already eat quinoa, which is a low carb, high protein seed and thought the flax might be good as well. Tincup, the muffins turned out well!

So far, no change to bloating or weight!

I'd have loved to try one!

BTW- You mentioned "bloating".

If your acidophulis has a product in it.. called FOS.... it has a HUGE complex name so look for that too...

It can cause bloating and gassy pains.

It's pretty famous for that.

Thanks, Tincup, checked the current probiotic and no FOS: my worst bloating is very high, causing my bra to be uncomfortable [I often have to take it off!].

Keebler, forget to thank you for the warning about taking meds at same time as flax meal 'porridge'...I think that's really sound advice.
