Hi Brandi, I have heard about grapfruit extract as cystbusters.
There are dangers when consuming grapefruit while on certain medications.
Grapefruit, and grapefruit juice contains several antioxidants that block the enzyme CYP3A4 for roughly 24 hours.
This enzyme is responsible for breaking down certain types of drugs. when you take a drug while this enzyme is blocked it might increases the effects of the drugs.
Depending on the drug, it can cause reactions that are either minimal, serious, or non existant.
Grapefruit juice is processed by your body in the liver by an enzyme which also degrades many drugs (not all drugs, just some such as cholesterol drugs like Lipitor and some blood pressure medications).
When taking one of these medications and drinking grapefruit juice, the grapefruit inhibits the metabolism of these drugs (i.e. it is hogging the enzyme all to itself in the liver and not leaving any for the medication so it can't be broken down).
The result is having too much of the medication in your body, which can lead to toxicity.
Drugs That Interact With Grapefruit Juice:
Here are some drugs that interact with grapefruit juice. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you're concerned about any of your medications.

You know Brandi thats a good question. I think you might want to call the pharmacist, and tell them what meds you are currently on.
I was on buspar once for anxiety. The prescription had stickies about grapefruit not to eat. Then I found this:
"For example, as much as 99% of BuSpar (Buspirone) is normally metabolized before the drug ever enters the bloodstream.
When taken in the presence of grapefruit juice (not even at the same time), the amount of BuSpar in the system could increase as much as 400% - a hazardous situation."
So even my doctor wasn't aware of this. He looked into it and told me stop the grapefruit, or stop the BuSpar.
It can be dangerous and your Zoloft might be affected by this. If it could increase Zoloft by this %, you could be really toxic. How would that figure in with Lyme symptoms? Could it make it a worse situitation?

I posted about this about two weeks or so ago. The answer turned out to be ..
Grapefruit and juice can hinder the absorption of some meds and it can enhance the affects of some others.
If you do a search I am sure the thread will come up and you can read through that one too..
I love grapefruits but go on kicks with them on and off.. lately On and I wanted to read up on them too.
Read through that thread and I am pretty sure I posted a few links that gave lists of the meds from each catagory.

Make sure you are not on xanax or other drugs in its class because there is an interaction with grapefruit!
