I started out with Samento (Cat's Claw) on the recommendation of my naturopath. I had to start out slowly, but can say for sure it had a huge beneficial impact on me. I was able to work outside in the summer heat and sun moving heavy rocks after a short while on it.
From there, I used the other Cowden herbals and switched them every two weeks. So, it was a Cowden herbal for two weeks followed by two weeks of Samento, followed by another Cowden herbal, etc. etc. My doc then suggested increasing the Cowden doses to 40 drops twice a day. I worked on that and then felt well enough that I decided to add Raintree Spiro to the protocol. Had great luck with that and was easily able to take the full 60 drops 3 times a day. They recommend two months of Spiro. After a few weeks, I felt well enough to add a short course of Tinadazole and Zithromax. I am now back to just the Spiro for the rest of the two months and doing pretty well. I never did any long antibiotic course. Did not think I could handle it and started out only with herbals. I also have been pulsing every two weeks for 3 days with 1500 mg/day Artemisinin. I just add it on top of whatever herbal I am taking at the time.
All and all, I seem to be doing very well and feeling significantly better than I did almost 6 months ago when I got the diagnosis of Lyme and started this. I had to start out slowly with the Cowden herbals, but now seem not to have a problem with full doses.
I did some reading on how antibiotics (herbal or otherwise) work and learned that mixing them can do one of three things: a. enhance one or both's action, b. interfere with one or both's action and diminish the overall effectiveness, and c. have no impact on either antibiotic.
So, from this textbook, I learned that there are risks in mixing herbals with antibiotics and since no research has likely been done about mixing them, you are experimenting with yourself. But, then most everything with Lyme is an experiment. I have been mixing and just taking a chance they don't counteract each other and so far I have not had any unusual or bad reactions from mixing.
