I'm only putting this question out there because it's Sunday and the doctor's office is closed...

I've been taking Flagyl for 5 days, 500mg 3x per day. I've been somewhat dizzy the past week as a result, but that is listed as a side effect so I didn't worry too much.

Last night, I started getting numb toes, fingers and leg. I've also got red cheeks, which I didn't have before.

Anyone else experience these side effects? I'm trying to decide whether to stop taking it until I can speak to my doctor on Monday. I don't want to mess up my medication schedule, but my inclination is to skip a day. Thoughts?

Thanks, Lisa

Flagyl gave me headaches from down under.

I do not recall your symptoms.

However, do a search on this board for flagyl.

There is a ton of info out there.

If you are unsure, skip a day.

Hugs,

Geneal

Dr B says this about it in the diagnosis/treatment guide:

Important precautions:
1. Pregnancy while on Flagyl is not advised, as there is a risk of birth defects.

2. No alcohol consumption! A severe, "Antabuse" reaction will occur, consisting of severe nausea, flushing, headache, and other symptoms.

3. Yeast overgrowth is especially common. A strict anti-yeast regimen must be followed.

4. Flagyl can be irritative to the nervous system- in the short term, it may cause irritability, "spacey" feelings, etc. Longer term, it can affect the peripheral nerves, causing tingles, numbness, etc. If mild, a change in dose may be required. Often, extra vitamin B can clear these symptoms. If the nerve symptoms persist or are strong, then metronidazole must be discontinued or these symptoms may become very long lasting.

5. Strong Herxheimer-like reactions are seen in almost everyone.

I had to stop after 5 days on 250 mg. Flagyl is very liver toxic and I would take a day or two off.

Thanks everyone. I stopped taking it after 5 days to take a break. I still have half the bottle left, may try again with a smaller daily dose in a few weeks...but not now. I feel great after stopping it! Holy cow what a difference! No longer falling over and I can get out of bed in the morning. This is a nice break.

I had horrible insomnia and/or fractionated sleep after taking generic Flagyl.

I had read a post somewhere that an LD patient's LLMD had received similar insomnia complaints from patients taking generic Flagyl.

The LLMD will now only prescribe name brand Flagyl.

I switched to name brand Flagyl, and the insomnia problems went away.

I have been taking Biaxin along with Flagyl. I go 2 weeks on and 2 weeks off with the Flagyl and seem to be getting pretty good results. I also take 4-8 Nystatin tablets per day to control and/or prevent yeast overgrowth.
