Thanks to several of you on Lymenet, I became familiar with KPU and approached my LLMD about diagnosis and potential treatment. He read Dr. K's take on it and agreed that I should give it a whirl, and so I've built up to the following daily supplement levels over the past 12 weeks:

zinc 250mg
B6 100mg
P 5 P 200mg
manganese 10-20mg
evening primrose oil 2600mg
vit C 6000mg
vit E
niacin 2000mg
taurine 1000mg

Since beginning the protocol, the improvements I've felt have been truly significant: a welcome calmness has taken over, PMS has vanished, sleep is much improved, and my former energy levels have returned. Best of all, I feel like I have my mind back!

I'm still treating Lyme, Babesia and Bartonella with antibiotics and herbs. But, since starting the KPU protocol, my edema is gone, my liver enzymes have gone down to the normal range, and I can tell that I'm detoxing much better.

So, I am wondering, have others of you following KPU experienced similar gains? I'd love to hear your experiences.

And, for those of you with practitioners well-versed in this protocol, how long do you stay on the high levels of these supplements? From what I understand, B6 and zinc will always be needed for maintenance doses, but I am wondering when I would need to taper down.

Thanks so much for all your help!

Lynne

I take Depyrrol and Oil of Evening Primrose. The Depyrrol has 210 mg of zinc .... which supplies 30 mg of elemental zinc. (can't remember the form it has) So, since it's only really 30 mg of zinc and under 40 is considered safe, I don't see a need to decrease it since it's not really that high to begin with.

My anxiety has gone. I felt bad for about three weeks with various types of flare ups, then just saw improvement after that. It seemed to be one of the last missing pieces for me. I love the protocol.

I'm glad you're seeing improvement, too!

So glad to hear it's helped you, too, sixgoofykids! I, too, had some flare-ups first 4-6 weeks, but since then just improvement.

Interesting about the Depyrrol and elemental zinc - I need to figure out how much zinc I'm actually getting between zinc chelate (75mg) and monomethionine (175mg) - does the way zinc is prepared matter in terms of recommended dosage?

I know I should know more about this, but...

What are the diagnostic procedures for KPU?

Thanks for starting a thread on this issue!

I came to the KPU supplements via a different route--looking up and implementing non-drug treatments for seizures.

At this time, I am taking 150 mg zinc, 30 mg manganese, 50 mg P-5-P, between 50 and 250 mg B6, 2000 mg taurine, and 250 mg niacin. I also take
B Complex, 400 IU Vitamin E, 1000 mg Vit C, and a couple of other vitamins and minerals.

I was taking niacinamide every few hours, but have stopped that while taking the Allergie-Immun drops.

I also was taking the 5 Factors for methylation, but have also stopped that to complete Allergie-Immun.

Definitely, these KPU supplements have put me in control of the seizure phenomenon. When I get the precursor feeling to the seizures, I take more B6, and it cools off almost immediately!

Since I am doing many things, I don't want to assign all benefits to the KPU. But, for me, being able to turn off a seizure before it starts is worth its weight in gold!!!!

I'm hoping that the AI drops with straighten out WHY I need the KPU supplements. If not, well, at least I know they work!

Best,

Cass A

Dawn, check out this summary of Dr. K's lyme treatment - on this page he talks about diagnosis and treatment of KPU/HPU:
http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2009/08/04/Dr-Klinghardts-Treatment-of-Lyme-Disease.aspx

Cass, that is wonderful about the KPU protocol preventing your seizures! In a similar vein, I've noticed that my limb jerks have really diminished since starting the protocol.

I'm really by tempted by all the AI successes I've heard around here, but it seems overwhelming...so hard to pick and choose among all the treatment options....

Good to hear people r doing well on it. Its been hard for me and many others. My Doc is ramping me up slowly by energy testing. He like doing separate supps not the one pill,as you can control the amount.

Would any of you mind telling me what your pyrrole levels were when you tested? I've heard that anything over 10 is borderline, and some treat levels between 10 and 20.

The lab that tested us said that 15, my son, and husband's level, is normal.
The md also agreed.

I had read that Pfeiffer Center, well known for tx of the disorder sometimes treats at those levels. My son has so many of the symptoms. I was sure he had it.

But I am afraid to try tx him myself, as I've heard you can get into trouble with bringing up heavy metals into the organs. Is this true? He has tested high for lead, and nickel and is chelating with a natural supplement.

Not sure where to go with this one. Maybe his symptoms are caused by the metals or lyme. I just don't know.

Linky, I never did have my pyrrole levels tested - I just started treating based on having nearly every listed KPU symptom.

I've been taking 500mg DMSA every other night while on the KPU protocol, and I've seemingly had no bad effects. (I had tested high for lead and mercury before embarking on the protocol).

I, too, have read of some doctors treating with pyrrole levels in the high end of normal range.

Good luck with your son -

Lynne
