Been taking Vit D3 5,000ius every day for the last 2 months and my levels failed to come up.

They are still at the 21 level ( Vit D 25 OH)

Dr. wants to prescribe D2 at 50,000 level one a week for 12 weeks. Does this make sense to do this??

If I'm not absorbing D3 would I ever absorb D2?
It has to convert to D3 right?

Any thoughts??

Thanks

This happened to me for a while. My LLMD can't shoveling more and more D3. I was at 10,000 IU a day. He said go to 20,000 IU a day. The problem was he tests so infrequently that it's dangerous. I did get it from 32 to 53 after 4 months. it's going back down again now w/the cold weather and I'm indoors too much. [Frown]

An endocrinologist put me on D2, 50,000IUs 2x a week. My levels went from 19 to toxic in a matter of 2 or 3 months.

I felt great for about 6 weeks because high levels of vitamin D act like a steroid in your body. When I quit taking it my levels bottomed out and I was sicker than ever.

I would stick with the D3 a little longer, as long as it isn't dropping.

My new endo had me take a one time 40,000 IU D3 to bring up (load) my level, then continue w/5,000 daily.

The 5,000 a day just didn't bring it up enough. Will retest in 6 wks.

TS96,

Just a thought - have you had your D1,25 levels along with your regular Vit D levels?

If your own D-OH levels fail to come up with prescription D3, it might be worth having your D1,25 checked too.

Do you know what your Calcium levels look like? The best test for this is ionized calcium, and it should be checked along with your PTH level (parathyroid hormone).

If your Vit D-OH (regular Vit D) is low, but Vit D1,25 is high, PTH is low, and Calcium is normal/high, it may not be safe to supplement Vit. D. This is the case in Sarcoidosis and other granulomatous diseases like it.

If your Vit D-OH is low, Vit D1,25 is normal or high, PTH is high, and Calcium is normal/low, you probably have regular old Vitamin D deficiency and will need to continue working on the absorption issues...

Do you have fat malabsorption? If so, it can be difficult to absorb A,D,E,K and sometimes just takes a while...

TS, don't feel bad. I have the same issue. I've been popping my D3 like chicklets for months and my D was 20-something recently. MD wanted me to up my dose to 7000 IUs per day.

Thanks all.

I don't have Ca or PTH numbers but I will keep that in mind.

I do have fat malabsorption according to some stool tests long ago so definitely can factor in.

I feel it's best to do a higher loading dose then cut back as dmc did and just wait a bit longer to test.
You guys are great. Thanks

Excellent point ! Of course here in the US more is ALWAYS better. So looking for + correcting the WHY is ignored.

Could br liver and /or gallbladder dysfunction.

Or allergy / sensitivity.

I see your point Massman.

I don't have a gallbladder so high prob it's malabsorption.

This happened to me.

Change brands of your D3 as a possibility.

I changed my brand to a physicians grade from a more general brand and it came right up after months of it not moving.

makes you think about what your buying and if your getting what you think.
