Has anyone with Hypothy or Hashimoto's used this instead of Levoxyl or Synthroid? Were your T#s or Thyroid Auto antibody improved?

Foggy,
I have Hashimoto's. Before my lyme dx, my ND diagnosed low thyroid function and had me paint iodine patches on myself as both a test and a treatment.
It was not enough, as all thyroid conditions are not caused by an iodine deficiency and therefore are not fixed by iodine supplementation. Kelp is used predominantly for the iodine, though of course it contains other nutrients.
I am but one data point, but based on the foregoing points I suspect that you'll need actual thyroid hormone supplementation.

Synthroid is what took me from sleeping 20 hours a day to 7-11 hours a nite.

Thanks everyone. My T#s are normal, but my autoantibody is elevated. LLMD thinks it's from bb or Mercury and a trial of Sythn didn't really do much.
I'm going to give the Kelp a try and see.

The Kelp question is being asked frequently. My doctor's answer "there is no clean kelp available any longer anywhere in the world."
Some people do well with Armor Thyroid; while it blocked my autonomics and was therefore not a good idea. It works well for my husband. ART testing determines which.
I used Mountain States Health Products, Thyroid H, a homeopathic, which worked great and kicks the immune system into gear.
The heavy metal detox is a priority. Mercury sits on the ligand sites of the hormone producing cells and nothing works well or normally until the stuff is out or the load lowered. It can take months to years if done right.
The KMT works great for all of this.
Take care.

I noticed the Kelp I bought had this disclaimer on the bottle:
Nature's Way Kelp is collected from deep in the ocean because Kelp close to shore may absorb many heavy metals and toxins.
I wonder if it's tested for Merc?

Krazy's has something here. I noticed a positive effect with coconut oil. I once heard that coco. oil influences thyroid function. while i don't exactly recall, think it has to do with conversion of t4 to t3. I have some notes buried somewhere on this, and need to did it up. hope i find it,.

I developed an overactive thyroid from taking too much kelp. My ND told me not to use it, as the thyroid is very senstive. I must say I felt great on it though until this happened.

Too much kelp? ^^^^
For starters kelp is whole natural food. Your body will use what it wants(of the iodine) and dispose of the rest.
2nd of all... it's highly unlikely that you were getting too much kelp. It sounds like your thyroid was kicking in and you were becoming hyper/energized.
That's normal when you're kick starting a gland.

I'm a little afraid of kelp due to impurities. Kelp basically sucks up all the minerals (and bad things too) from oceans.
There have been reports of arsenic found in kelp supplements.
It's probably not an issue if you get a good brand, but I have not seen any evidence that kelp is necessarily better than plain potassium iodide, which can be purchased super cheap, and in various strengths.

Gotta get kelp from the cold oceans...
Norweigan Iceland
Pure waters away from industrialization
And the benefits to kelp was iodine is that the body will only use the iodine from kelp as it needs it.
You don't have to worry about TOO much kelp.
With iodine you do. Much like synthetic thyroid you have to figure out what works for you.

About 30 years ago a chiropractor gave me kelp and it seemed miraculous. I felt much better, my skin improved and many of my undiagnosed thyroid issues disappeared. When I got pregnant I continued with kelp but by then was using a very large amount of it - 6-8 capsules a day. My daughter had a very bad weight problem right from birth and I found out later that kelp can cause a baby to be born hypothyroid. She now takes thyroid medication. If I take kelp now I have a strong reaction to it - get heart palpitations, sweats etc. I stay away from it. It is much better to take armour thyroid or something else.
