Has anyone taking Minocycline had eye blurriness?
My daughter just recently went back up to her full dose of 50mg twice a day.
She just told me she has been getting eye blurries off and on. She said she has had this for awhile, but more so seems last few days.
We just increased the Minocycline last week. She has taken 50mg twice a day in the past and didn't seem to have this problem.
Noticed it is listed as a side effect of Mino, also checked with Dr. Now we have to stop the Mino for two days and see how things are and then restart at only 50 mg once a day and see how things go.

- This could very well be from the effect on the inner that Mino has.
Is she nauseated at all or have any kind of vertigo or balance issues? Is speech harder for her - to find the right words, etc?
If the inner ear is connected, B-6 and NAC have been used to help minimize the inner ear side-effects from mino.
The inner ear has a great deal to do with our vision. If the inner ear is disturbed at all, reading and comprehending, recall - all that will be disturbed, too.
Mino can be very hard on the ears. Many just can't tolerate it.
GINGER ROOT CAPSULES may also be of help as might GOTU KOLA.
This drug may also cause the following symptoms that are related to inner ear problems:
. . . Nervous system adverse effects have included headache, hypesthesia, paresthesia, sedation, vestibular reactions such as dizziness and vertigo.
Additionally, rare cases of decreased hearing, tinnitus, and benign intracranial hypertension (pseudotumor cerebri), and bulging fontanels in infants have been reported. . . .
. . . .

========================
There is a timed-release minocycline. However, in one test, 10% of the trial subjects had acute inner ear attacks during the testing. Where the inner ear is concerned, I think 10% is a high rate. Still, since lyme is such a serious infection and if your doctor still thinks mino is the only way to go - and all the liver protective measures are employed - you might ask about timed-released minocin, pelleted version.
Good luck. Hope this works out well. -

YOGA FOR THE EYES - book and DVD is a nice training tool.

When she gets blurriness, she needs to lie down and rest - with eyes closed, even covered. Her eyes are probably getting very tired if the inner ear is affected.
Lyme, itself, can target the inner ear. And so many things affect that system. In the Tinnitus thread, you will see why liver support is so important. Ask your doctor about Milk Thistle, etc.
But, since mino brought on this side-effect, it might be best to try a different med . . . or get all the protective pieces well in place before restarting. Azithromycin (Zithromax, "Zith") can also be very hard on the ears.
If you have any new furnishings, chemicals used in finishing those can also affect the liver & the eyes & balance system. Be sure to avoid scented products, etc. as that also makes a difference in the stress on the liver and inner ear.
The inner ear is the very first warning system to the body of a chemical exposure. Minimizing the chemicals at home and at school can lift the load. And so many things now are just loaded with chemical scents so it's hard to miss those. But one exposure can affect someone the rest of the day - or longer.
Lyme patients often have chemical sensitivities and I hope your daughter does not but blurry eyes can also be a sign of that and early avoidance can help keep that from getting worse. -

- The kind of light bulbs in your daughter's environments could also be causing eye (and inner ear) strain. Note on the Vestibular Symptom list, that fluorescent bulbs cause symptoms.
For myself, I can't even be around the new type of energy saving bulbs. I get very ill, very fast. I've tried reading with them and just can't.

Jane, yes, this is very common on mino. I was on 400mg. of it for over 3 years and had the problem off and on. Worse in the beginning and got better as I got used to the dose.
Hoping for best of all for you and your daughter.

Many thanks Keebler, I will be reading through the links you posted for me.
She did have some feelings of moving , etc while sitting down and standing. This symptom came on
when we went up to the 50mg twice a day , every other day. But seems to have passed.
So perhaps the Mino is the culprit for the eyes too.
Ping- Thanks, hopefully she will adjust, but sounds like if it does not pass, then Dr. will change meds.
She tolerated the 50mg twice a day months ago, then we had to stop and restart-- Now we are back to 50mg twice a day , every day and now this.

Wow! I have been on Minocycline for a while now, and I actually was about to (and probably still will )call my doctor tomorrow because my eye problems have gotten so much worse. I have blurry vision and crazy floaters. I didn't realize it could be related to Minocycline.

My daughter had blurry vision and floaters a lot before treatment, so I'm wondering if the mino could be causing a worsening of her symptoms, i.e., herx?
My daughter still gets blurry vision and an "eyelash falling into her eyes" feeling, but we've discovered that that is actually blepharitis (sp?)--infection of the eyelids.
She puts an ointment on her eyelid where the lashes meet the lid and after a week or so the feeling clears up. (Can also try just cleaning the eyelid area with gentle baby soap and washcloth--we do that now to try to keep it in check.) It is apparently very common.
Not sure if this is what your daughter has--sounds more like a true blurring of vision in her case--if you really don't feel like it is a herx, I would stop the meds (check with doc first!)--dont' want to fool around with eyes and ears.
I hope she feels better soon!

Most of the people that can't take it have severe inner ear reactions. Extreme ringing/dizzyness.

Thanks everyone for all the information. I appreciate every post.
We will restart at only 50mg on Thursday and see if that makes a difference.
She has mentioned the blurry feeling before, but only once in awhile. I thought maybe something was in her eye, etc.
But last couple of days she mentioned more often and then I read that it is a serious side effect from Minocycline.

My daughter is taking Mino 50 mg a day, Zithromax not sure the dosage, Zoloft .25 for anxiety and now they just introduced Cipro for the 10 days out of every month. Her most recent complaints have been horrible burning in her legs and insomnia. Anyone ever hear of this? I know this are both symptoms, but it just seems to have gotten worse lately.

- tls122269,
She should tell her doctor about the burning.
what liver support is she taking? That is really important.
Magnseium should help, too. And fish oil. Turmeric might as well but also gentle movement (like some yoga stretches, gentle bouncing without feet ever really leaving the ground) to get the lymph tissue moving out the toxins. Lots of water. -
