My LD switched me today from malarone/clindamycin/tindamax/factive/ artemisinin to Larium/doxy/tindamax/ artemesinin.
I can't take Mepron as it does not agree with my liver. I have searched the posts, but I'd still love to hear people's experiences.
Thanks Kris

Lariam is known for causing some weird psychological issues for SOME people (doesn't mean you will have this problem, it's just something to watch out for).
What dosage are you on of the Lariam? I'm thinking of asking my LLMD to try me on it.

My LLND is giving my Babs the ole' 1-2-3 punch and has me on Mepron/Zith/Flagyl at the moment. She has talked about putting me on Larium at some point. I have never heard of it prior to her mentioning it.
I would be interested in hearing your experience.

This is one of those drugs that you won't know until you try it.
When I first went on it, I heard both sides. There are some that swear by it and were even calling it their "wonder drug".
Others didn't do as well with it.
I personally was seeing and hearing things that weren't there. We live in the country on a cul de sac with NO TRAFFIC, but I swear I was in some city with honking horns and major traffic jams.
Obivously no one heard it but me. It wasn't scary but the doctor felt that was enough to even stop and try something else. I was hoping to give it a good solid try.
Good luck to you and keep us posted.

by the way- if the psych stuff ends up being minor, can you keep taking the drug? Does it go away if you quit and re-start?
My LLMD took it for a trip to a malaria-endemic country and he's pretty down on it, but I'm thinking it's one of the babesia options I can probably (?) afford and haven't tried.

I've been on Lariam for almost a year now. I have a tough case of Babs, and had relapsed before.
At my last appointment my LLMD listed all the things I am on for Babs, and it's virtually every treatment med plus artemisinin that I am on now. I think it was 6 things!
Lariam hasn't given me problems, but most meds don't, other than herxing.

This has been on my list of things to try, if what I'm on now doesn't work.
LymeMD recently said that some people have great results from it when nothing else seems to work for babesia (paraphrasing). So it seems hit or miss.
I have a question about dosing: It seems that some people take a "loading dose" the first day, of 5 pills in one day? Then they take maybe just one pill per week.
How many of you have done the loading dose, or know someone that did? I was reading about it on Lymenet, and the 3 or so people that had done it seemed to have lived through it, no permanent damage, etc. I'm wondering how common this "loading dose" is, and if there are any horror stories?

I want to add that he didn't talk about the loading dose per se, just said he has not had folks have a bad experience. He did give me a run-down on the side effects. Kris

When I saw this subject, I just had to write.
NOOOOO, NO, NO to larium.
My daughter took larium last fall, as prescribed by a prominent LLMD. She ended up in the psych ward of a hospital, where they treated her like s**t.
She became very combative, very anxious, very paranoid, and started cutting.n She was hallucinating.
We took her to the E.R. because she was hurting herself. Wrong move, the E.R. (tricked) her into going to the psych ward (they promised a med evaluation, which never happened).
It happened to be a wkend, so only an incompetent skeleton staff. They took away her pain meds. Her LLMD tried numerous times to call, but the nurses would not listen, or let him get through. Totally refused to look up larium and understand its psych effects.
Long story short, she was out after the wkend. Larium may work for some people, but whenever I hear that word, everything in my body bristles.
So, in our experience, LARIUM WAS A DISASTER BEYOND PROPORTIONS.
Good luck and God bless.

I have learned that the worst thing to do when I feel psychotic is to go to the ER or call 911. It's best if you can have a family member take care of you and have something like Xanax on hand.
Of course if you are suicidal, you should ALWAYS call 911 or the suicide line. Same applies if you are a danger to yourself or others.
I'm just speaking of psychosis when one is NOT alone or in danger.
The ER often makes things worse.
Good psychiatric care is a must with Lyme patients who need it...but I'm speaking of the ER specifically.

I am starting it next month. Thanks for the heads up about the psych symptoms. I will keep an extra close eye on it. I am not too worried b/c I have yet to have other psych symptoms in general & on other meds such as Mepron.
