i have a script for vitamin b12, vitaminb6, vitamin D, and ferritin. i'll have to go to quest diagnostics. are blood tests accurate for vitamin levels? should i stop taking vitamins so many days before testing for it to be accurate?
also, it just says vitamin d- should it specify vitamin d3 or another form (i know something was mentioned about this in the past)
thanks, maureen

Vit D is fine for the regular labs but other vitamins should be tested by intracellular testing. Serum testing may show normal values but in reality you do not have any of the actual vitamin in your cells. One of the best labs for this is Spectracell.

okay, well i'll get the blood work anyway for b12 and then i'll go from there to see if i should test further. maybe i can get my llmd to prescribe b12 shots.
should the script specifiy which vitamin d (all it says is vitamin d, not vitamin d3 or anything like that- want to make sure i get the right test).
also, does anyone know if i should be off vitamins for a few days before testing? thanks

My doc said to get a correct reading on vitamin D, you must be off the D for 1 week prior to blood draw. I think this is especially true if you are taking higher levels of D.

You need both kinds of Vit D testing. 25-hydroxy-vitamin D 1,25 dihydroxy-vitamin D

According to LymeMD you don't need the 1,25 test after all. You can read it for yourself on the LymeMD blog site. He has recently updated about D.
My doc doesn't think it is neccessary either. The body takes care of the balance between the 2.
It is old research that claims both are needed. Its hard to keep up with all thats changing in this area, but if you search you can find it.
