Hello Everyone,

Who out there has a toddler that is being treated for Lyme?

I really would like to know what their intial symptoms were.

Here is my issue. I was diagnosed with Lyme and a co infection of babesia in October 2009.

I have a 2 year old daughter that is VERY petite for her age. She is in the 10% for her heighth and doesn't even hit the chart for her weight. She wasn't premature. She weighed 6 lbs. 15 oz. and was 5 days early. Her pediatrician actually sent us to a pediatric endrocrinologist when she was 9 months old. She didn't gain ANY weight from 6 to 9 months of age. The specialist said all of her blood tests were fine and he said she was just a petite baby.

My LLMD can't tell if I had Lyme before my pregnancy, but my symptoms all began in Jan 2009. This was around my daughters first birthday. Ironically, my symptoms began 2 weeks after I stopped breast feeding. Although this doesn't seem like anything, I believe this is a link to my Lyme puzzle.

My LLMD tested my daughter through IgeneX in Dec 2009 and he said her tests were normal. However, she is getting a persistant rash on the top of her back. She is constantly itching it. She also complains of things hurting on her body out of the blue. But my husband and I don't think she knows what hurt really is. We don't know if something is itching her and she just says it hurts.

I guess I'm just a concerned mom who would like to gain more knowledge regarding Lyme in toddlers.

If you can share your toddlers Lyme story I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you ,
tiffagoo

I don't have a toddler with it but my friend has a son who is a little older than a toddler but maybe she will be able to help. If you want I can ask if she minds you contacting her to ask questions. I believe he was either 3 or 4 when he got it, I can't remember. He got it on the same trip that I got it :-(

I started treating my daughter when she was 2. She would wake up itching for no reason and when I asked if anything hurt, she would point to her ears sometimes and other times her head. Others didn't believe me but since the rest of my family was infected, I chose to treat her despite negative tests.

Later she got positive babs and bart tests, but still not a pos lyme test. Only band 41. She is doing much better now after 1.5 years of treatment.

IMO, you should do a trial of zith or something to see if she improves or herxes. Also get an Igenex test done.

I have to go now but can give more info later. Look up my old posts for more info.

Thank you for the information.

I should also add that my daughter had an allergic reaction to her shots at 2 1/2 months of age. We were very concerned about shots in general, so we decided to only get the DTaP and polio shots. Three days after the shots were given she began to have seizures.

The seizures subsided after 2 weeks, but we have only given her one polio shot since then. Our pediatrician constantly tells us that the seizures were not from the shots. But we know better. The shots were the only thing that had changed in her life during that time.

I'm still concerned that this reaction had something to do with Lyme.

Tickbattler- a year and a half of treatment sure does seem like a long time for a little one. Did she have any side effects from the antibiotics?

Thanks, tiffagoo

tiffagoo, sorry for what your little girl is going through. So sad when kids suffer like that.

It infuriates me that your doctor would deny that the seizures were related to the shots. No big surprise there tho.

To all parents who've not yet given your kids vaccines, think long and hard about this. Research it and know what you're getting into before you go through with it.

Read what Dr. Mercola has to say on the subject of vaccines. Just google Dr. Mercola and vaccines and your eyes will be opened wide.

tiffagoo, I'm praying for your family and your little girl.

Gary

Hi My son is 12 yrs old and has Lyme ( pos. W.B )Nov 2009. He had minor strange symtoms that would come and go during winter of 2008/2009. Mainly joint related.

He was due for vaccinations Aug 2009 for 7th grade (at that time we did not know he had Lyme) he had a bad reaction to the shots ( Chic. Pox and the Tdap Tetanus combo ) the reaction mainly consisted of pain and rash that spread over his shoulder and back, he was kept in the doctors office for about 20 minutes for observation.

He was ill for 2-3 days after the shot and then seemed ok. Then in a few weeks he had shortness of breath, leg pains and even bloody stools.

His doctor could not find anything wrong but then he got sick with cold/flu in Nov. and ended up with fluid on his lung, they gave him Zithromax for it and that is what caused his HUGE herx. reaction and then was tested for Lyme by western blot, at my insistence I might add. His doctor said he really doubted Lyme disease and thought we were dealing with Lupus or J. rheumatoid arthritis.

Even though he is alot older I thought the shot reaction might give you a little insight.

Best of luck to you. Carol

Yes, I have stopped ALL vaccinations. I had started giving her the MMR in separate shots, starting with Measles and after that first shot she lost her coordination for a day or two. I was terrified and haven't done a shot since.

Sorry to hear about the seizures. Many get these with lyme too.

1.5 years is a long time, but it can take that long to get them back to full health. Only recently she has stopped waking and screaming in the middle of the night. Now it's only occasionally instead of every night, which is not normal.

I have her on a lot of probiotics and she has not had any side effects so far, except one yeast infection that went away with topical Triple Paste AF. I am always worried though.

My 5 year old twin boys have been on abx longer, but they were more ill than my daughter.

I know there is a good LLMD who sees kids in CA. Dr. H. There is also a good one in Washington (Dr. K). You might take her for an evaluation.

I am being treated by Dr. H.

And he tested her and said everything is fine so far. But I still have my doubts. I know I'm in good hands with my LLMD, but her symptoms still worry me. I guess I'll just keep my LLMD informed about any new symptoms. It's hard because my husband is in complete denial that she could have Lyme.

I'm not saying that she does have Lyme, she just has alot of symptoms that worry me.

Thanks for all your advice

I have been in your spot...I take my kids to Dr. J in CT and even he wasn't really sure whether my daughter was infected; she looks and acts so healthy.

But after the experience with my boys, I knew something was not right and asked for a trial of abx, based on a few "minor" symptoms: itching, night waking and whining irritability and oppositional behavior on and off, saying ears or head hurts mostly when asked (she did not offer this info unless asked). Later, into treatment, she developed night sweats and fatigue increased until we started treating for babesia.

You might just randomly ask her if anything hurts and keep track of it. I ask my kids several times/day so I can gauge how they are doing. I would try to figure out whether she is itching a place where she says it hurts so you can determine if she just means she is itching or whether it really is hurting her.

My husband did not fully believe it with my kids either, until he got sick as well.

You might look for posts on children's symptoms to see if there are other symptoms she has that you didn't realize were symptoms.

Some symptoms my boys also had at ages 2 to 4 until we started treatment: insomnia, hyperactivity with one boy and lethargy with the other, ears turning red at random times in the day, bed wetting after being trained, migrating muscle or joint pains (only occasional), sunlight sensitivity, noise sensitivity, emotional or oppositional behavior, low appetite, continuous ear or throat infections.

Sorry to hear you have this to worry about. I know what it's like. It's hard not knowing but you will figure it out one way or another soon enough. Just keep reading and learning and trust your good Mom instincts!

Best of luck to you,

tickbattler
