Our pharmacist told us today that the reason Medicare won't pay for Armour is that it is such an old drug that its approval ran out in the US.
So it is currently illegal to make it here. But he did say that the new FDA approval is expected this year. Then it will be available more widely. And it will then be covered by Medicare.
I guess the suppliers are getting it from Canada or elsewhere. It is costing me about $60/month. But it is well worth it! I am waking up earlier and earlier with more energy.
So now I guess I get to go to Mexico for Bicillin and Canada for Armour thyroid. Oh boy. I am scared to death of having our government "help" even more in my health care!!!! I'll need a travel plan and a new passport!

I am sorry but I think we need a lot more information about this. Especially sourcing info.
From what pigs do they get the thyroid to make the Armour. How are those pigs raised? Are they given
vaccines and other medications that can be genetically transferred? I know we have to believe
they have our best interests at heart, but after Lyme I have to wonder.

I think you have a good point! Fortunately for me, my LLMD is the one who referred me to this particular pharmacist. He is an older gentleman with much experience. He personally compounds my thyroid and mails it to me. We will be sure to ask him this question!

I got Armor thyroid today from Walgreens. How could it be illegal if I was able to get it? I did have to go to 3 pharmacies before I found it. I think it is slowly becoming available again.
I really don't understand the whole issue but then again I am just now starting Armor.

TxLymie: It is not illegal to distribute it. The manufacturing of it stopped because the FDA approval was so old. New approval is in the works and USA manufacturing should start later this year. Then it will be more widely available.
This is what our pharmacist told us. Thanks, Keebler for mentioning NatureThroid....I'll ask him about it, too.

I have not had any trouble getting it at all. Just got some last week, three months worth. It is not illegal, that's for sure.
NatureThroid is like armour in that it comes from pigs but it's a purer product with few fillers added. It is a better product especially for those who may have allergies.

I take Armour .... used to take Naturethroid, but can't seem to get it right now. My local pharmacy has Armour, but I was having to go to a compounding pharmacy for a while last winter.

My doc is switching me from Westhroid/Naturethroid to Armour. It weighs very heavily on my conscience about using products that are not coming from animals that have been pasture-raised.
I wonder if there is a thyroid product that comes only from pigs that have been pasture and humanely raised?
