I'm at the end of my rope. My doc put me on bactrim, also on zithro oral now and iv rocephin. Never been this depersonalized in years. What does bactrim treat, experiences on it? Feel good and thanks. [confused]

My now famous doc used Bactrim DS (double strength) to treat my babesiosis. He told me it takes time, but it will get rid of it. (He said it takes twice as long to get rid of babs using Bactrim as compared to Mepron and zith combo. I couldn't take that combo, unfortunately.)

It also treats bartonella he told me.

My experience was as soon as I started taking it, I got a flare or sick time every week like clockwork. It started every Friday evening and ended on Sunday evening.

It lasted 48 hours each week. Doc said it was the babesiosis 7-day cycle. So, he had me add artimesinin beginning Friday morning and ending Sunday evening. The art was to encompass the sick time, in other words.

The art worked like a miracle. First weekend, didn't get sick feeling until Saturday afternoon and it only lasted 6 hours and was mild!!! Each weekend, the sick time got less and less (became just an overwhelming urge to go to sleep for a half-hour, for example) until it went to every other weekend (14-day babs cycle) and then it was gone.

The babs sick time I got was horrible. I felt doomed. I would not talk, move, eat, etc. I just laid there and believed I would never ever get better. Even though I had felt good before starting the bactrim, and even though I had experienced the sick time lifting each Sunday night, I could not reason with myself when this sick time hit. So, that is how the babs affected me psychologically.

So, the Bactrim brought out the babs 7 day cycle like I couldn't believe. It was so weird and so pronounced. It would land on me, and then it would lift 48 hours later. I could hardly believe it.

I sure was glad the lyme doc had the explanation for it, because it was so strange I was almost hesitant to tell him what was going on--it seemed unbelievable.

Of course, as we learn, lyme does many unbelievable things to us. Things you can't even imagine. So, here's one for you.

I've heard it helps bartonella.

I had lyme and babesia and it helped "something." [Smile]

In late January I switched off doxy 200 mg 2x/day
and on to 8 days flagyl followed by zithromycin
+ Bactrim. I had been having a lot of shin and
sole of foot pain and had read that Bactrim helped several Bartonella patients in anecdotes
in the medical literature. It is cheaper than
rifampin and you do not need to monitor your
liver enzymes etc. It turned out to be a lucky
choice. Not only did Bart symptoms improve but
brain fog totally lifted for 1st time in 11 months. Like TF I started to notice a cycle with with certain symptoms such as: nightly perspiration on forehead, to and fro dizziness (esp. at night) chills, jaw chattering,
and these symptoms were getting worse when everything else had gotten better. I saw that TF had used bactrim + Artemisinin for Babs and that is what I am doing (except I continued zithro to avoid Bart relapse). First used artemisinin 100mg 2x/day over this weekend, I had predicted a 2 week cycle was due and it came but it was shorter than the prior one and I came out of it feeling better than the last cycle.
I have no health insurance and if I do not have to buy $6,000 worth of (6 months) of mepron that will be fine with me. I have access to microscope and was able to find Babs in 1 out of 1000 red blood cells and I can check it again every 3 months or so and correllate all that and keep posting on
progress.

Thanks again TF for sharing your results.

I switched from Rifampin and zithro to Bactrim DS and biaxin.
It is the best combination for me. I feel really good most of the time. I could feel my mind clearing within days of starting it. Over the last two months I have become happier and felt more like doing things and seeing people. I still have bart - can feel it in my shins - but everything is getting better. I also take artemesnin in case of babesia. I was given tindamx to pulse two days a week but am out of that. I believe this about covers everything borrelia in the blood.

According to my LLMd treats Bart and Babs and he said Bactrim you will notice a difference more quickly than other abx in his experience.
