posted 04-10-2010 10:59 AM -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- After having a rash for almost two weeks, I finally got to see my regular Dr. and he started me on 100mg doxy twice daily the day he did the Lyme, ANA and Rocky mountain SF test. I started them the night of March 29th and during the night on March 31 I awoke with a racing heart.
At first I told my husband I needed him to take me to the hospital, I then asked him to call 911. My heart felt like it was going to explode. By morning at the hospital my rash was bright red, lacey and running together. My Dr. asked the surgeon to do a biopsy and so the surgeon checked me in the morning. By the time he came back 12 hours later, he could only find two places on my stomach to biopsy.
The next morning I was released from the hospital and a week later, I still feel week and like my heart is working in overdrive. Several times I have awoken in the night with heart palpitations.
Since then my Dr. got positive labs for AB Lyme. He told me that all the claritin, benadryl and steriods I had been on caused my sympathetic nervous system to go into overdrive and that is what caused the incident with my heart. While in the hospital he started me on .5mg 2x's daily of Ativan for my nerves.
My question is was the incident with my heart racing and my losing movement of all limbs for several hours along with the severe rash symptons considered a herx? I had been on Doxy for about 48 hours.

Doxycycline side effects Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Stop using doxycycline and call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects:
severe headache, dizziness, blurred vision;
fever, chills, body aches, flu symptoms;
severe blistering, peeling, and red skin rash;
urinating less than usual or not at all;
pale or yellowed skin, dark colored urine, fever, confusion or weakness;
severe pain in your upper stomach spreading to your back, nausea and vomiting, fast heart rate;
loss of appetite, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes); or
easy bruising or bleeding, unusual weakness.
Less serious doxycycline side effects may include:
swollen tongue, trouble swallowing;
mild nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or stomach upset;
white patches or sores inside your mouth or on your lips;
sores or swelling in your rectal or genital area; or
vaginal itching or discharge.

Though I don't personally know you, based on the information you provided I disagree with your doctor. I doubt that those other drugs sent you into sympathetic overdrive. It sounds to me that Lyme toxins/die off sent you into sympathetic overdrive. Happened to me with every antibiotic. I have heart problems from the infection as well, so to say that Lyme isn't the cause of your heart troubles is a bit ignorant. If you are stuck in tachycardia as I was, a beta blocker can help keep your heart rate lower and prevent some arrhythmias if you have any.
Your doctor obviously doesn't know much about the disease. I would say you are having a neuropsychiatric reaction from Lyme die off and/or a bartonella co-infection. I think these very well may be your herx. Everyone herxes a little differently, and some people herx much stronger than others.
Starting doxy was probably the scariest experience of life. I had a reaction just like you and it was completely unexpected and put me in the hospital.
That being said, maybe you will handle something like Ceftin better. I'm not surprised your doctor prescribed Ativan.
You should probably consider detoxing. The easiest way to start is drink lots of water and add some lemons if you have them. There are better ways, but they involve going to health food stores and buying stuff you probably don't already have in your cabinet.
And unless you are suffering from something life threatening that requires steroids, it may be wise to stay away from steroids from now on.

Maybe your doctor is right and it was the steroids. Steroids make my heart pound. And steroids can make lyme go crazy. However, LD makes my heart pound too.
How are you feeling now? Are you still on the Doxy? Have you seen or made an appt with a LLMD?
