After recently phasing off of antibiotics for my lyme disease, my llmd now has me on herbal treatments. I was also treated for babs and bart.
I've been on the herbs for a couple of weeks now and seem to be doing pretty well.
Last night I kept dreaming of attached ticks on my lower right leg. Four of them of varying size.
Imagine my surprise(and shock, and repulsion, and anger...) as I went to take a bath this morning and found an engorged tick on my upper right thigh.
I was in the yard yesterday putting up fencing and also brought two of my dogs to the vet. I imagine one of these activities is when I picked it up.
What kills me though is that I did a thorough tick check before changing into my night clothes last night.
I feel like crying. Frustrated does not even begin to describe how I'm feeling right now.
I carefully removed the tick but didn't save it as I've heard that testing isn't all that accurate and won't show coinfections.
The area is very red and sore and I'm freaking out, especially since I'm no longer on antibiotics.
I've got a call in to my llmd, who is taking forever to call me back. I'm hoping he'll put me back on something for a couple/few weeks as a preventive.
I'm hesitant to start up with doxy as I had severe sun sensitivity while on it last summer.
Are there any other antibiotics that are as effective as doxy early on?
I've got some leftover zith and ceph and am debating taking some because I'm losing my mind waiting for my llmd office to call me back.
I hate ticks.

My daughter was bitten last summer, and since we live in the south, the llmd put her on minocycline for four weeks.
It doesn't make you as sun-sensitive as doxycycline does, but is supposed to be as effective.

I cannot take Doxy but did ask my LLMD about what to do when (I say when because like many I am a tick magnet)I get bitten again.
He said Biaxin. Biaxin is really the only abx that has helped me - but that is just me.
He seemed to think Biaxin would be as effective as Doxy.. Zythro. is in the same family of abx.s as Biaxin I believe.

Llmd's office called back and won't prescribe anything unless I see him(this is somewhat annoying to me as I'm presently under his care).
Anyway. They would like me to come in tomorrow, which I can't do.
I have my regular appointment with him scheduled for next Wednesday and will keep that.
In the meantime, I think I'll start back up on my leftover Ceftin and Zith. I have about 2 weeks worth left of both. I was taking these before I started the herbal protocol.
Thanks so much for the input, linky and trigal.
I hope I'm doing the right thing here.
Yes trigal2, never ending is right. I had white socks pulled up to my knees over my sweatpants and checked myself periodically, and then again before bed. One still found it's way onto/into my flesh.
I think I'll just lock myself up in the house for the summer and fall. Then again, they'll probably still find me.

I'm not a doctor, but I think you're doing the right thing. Ceftin and Zith go after two different forms of the Lyme. I certainly wouldn't wait till next week to begin treatment.
Seems odd that he won't prescribe anything since you're already a patient, unless it's been a while since you've been in.

No, I see him monthly, sixgoofykids. Have been for months. And I'm still undergoing treatment.
I know he's a good llmd but it's this sort of thing that makes me wonder. ???
Thanks for the vote of confidence on the ceftin and zith. I really need it right now!

Sleep with a slice of garlic taped to the wound. It stinks but it helps killing a lot of things. I also rubbed bee venom ointment there at least once a day.
My naturopath told me about the slice of garlic for about a week or so (I did it for more, just to be sure...).
Another thing was a mix of essential oils like thyme and oregano. These are though VERY STRONG, so be careful. They kill everything locally, but you can get a bad rash from them if you don't dilute them.
Another thing that doesn't hurt much and is VERY strong is frozen garlic. Biopure has it, it is very widespectrum and one of the strongest 'killers' I ever took. Solve it in water and take during meals.
If I were you, I would also go immediately on astragalus, to help my immune system fight this new infection. Buhner recommends that every new tick bite. I would take it for one or two months.
I'm living away from tick land now but will be back to Europe soon for vacations. The best ever tick preventive bite treatment I got is an homeopathic dilution of Borrelia, very very diluted.
It's called Borrelia burgdorferi LM6, prescribed by my lyme doctor after I saw him in my 3rd re-infection... Never more I got reinfected by borrelia. Ticks that contain borrelia don't bite you if you take this. I took that once a week, for a month, then once every two weeks for two months then only once a month until tick season ends (about November).
But my daughter still caught lyme encephalitis (TBE) with a new tick bite in 2008, as the tick contained TBE, but not borrelia. But the number of tick bites diminished for us to about 95% less than what we usually got every summer in Switzerland. MOst ticks there are contaminated with borrelia and if you give animals this homeopathic product, they are bitten much less (really, about 90-95% less).
It works for sheep and it works for cats (I tried on my cat, from about 500 attached ticks a year, he got down to about 10-20 ticks a year). That alone convinced me it works as tick repellent!
I suspect Deseret Biologicals in the US sells these highly diluted borrelia nosodes.
Good luck. I hope your tick was not contaminated. I fought reinfections quite a few times and so did my daughter. It was not funny.
