Does anyone have one and can offer some advice? I was supposed to get a port but when the radiologist saw that I had to infuse twice a day, he said the hickman was a better choice.
What's up with all the extra tubing at the end. (I think they are called lumens) Can I just have one or do I have to have two or three. I am only infusing doxy.
This is very new to me . Any info would be great

Here is most of the info for others..
You only need one lumen to do IV. It is easy to live with it, you get used to it and just tuck it into your bra. If you are a guy you can band aid the end of the tube to your chest.
The Hickman requires a minor outpatient procedure to insert it then stitch it in place. It is sore for a few days but soon heals and is easy to use, your arms are free. You just have to keep the site clean and make sure nothing gets in the tube! [Smile]
I had mine for 9 months before it got infected, many other people I know have had them longer. I used to use it with one of those small fanny packs and put my IV ball in there (i was on a continuous infusion)and walk around infusing.
People who get 2 or 3 lumens, thats usually for cancer or something else.

My 20 year old daughter was put on one because her veins could not support the other. She is doing great with no problems at all. Keep it clean and dry and change the bandage weekly.
Good luck
