hello to all,
i am very new to this site, and really, to this subject. my 5 year old son was bitten by a tick in the first week of april. this weekend i remembered to check the bite site and sure enough he had a rash. we have taken him to our pediatrician, who is wonderful and open, however not the most experienced in the area of lyme. we have started our son on 10ml of amoxicillin BID (twice daily) and as of now only have a prescription for 10 days. i am aware that this is not be enough time for the medication to work. so, finally, my question is... does anyone know what an appropriate dosage and duration of amoxicillin a 5 year old, weighing 44lbs, should receive?
also, is anyone familiar with the work of Stephen Harrod Buehner? a friend has referred me to his book....?
thanks for your help,
j

Keep after it if your son is still ill after 10 days... I personally would want 6-8 wks of treatment for a new bite.

UP FOR HELP... I know nothing about amoxy with children. ( nor about Buhner )
WELCOME!!

Begin your search for a Lyme specialist (LLMD).. go to Seeking a Doctor and ask for help.

Your Son is 44 lbs=20KG

Amoxicillin dose is 20-50mg per KG per day.
1000mgdivided in three doses.
For your son is good 3 time 250 amoxicillin that is combined with somthing else to stay longer in his blood.
Or pure amoxicillin 250 x 250 x500mg a day with good probiotics for 6-8 weeks as Lymetuu said.

This is serious thing cure it now when you can later will bee very dificult.
Best wishes for your son.

thank you both for your reply. i will look for a LLMD in our area.
just to clarify about the dosage. his current dosage of amoxicillin is 500mg every 12 hours. do you think we should stay at this amount for 6-8 weeks?
again, thank you!

jessc, be sure to get photos of your son's rash. It is important documentation. Place something near the rash, like a coin or ruler, before photographing to give it size definition.

Learn as much as you can so he can get proper treatment as early as possible. Check out treatment guidelines (which include antibiotic types and dosage recommendations) at http://www.ilads.org/lyme_disease/B_guidelines_12_17_08.pdf

You may want to click on "Support Groups" on the left of the screen. These contacts may be able to give you important information and/or doctor recommendations.

Keep us posted on how your son is doing.

pictures of the rash are hard to get. the bite is on his scalp and my boy has quite the head of hair. the rash seems to be fading a bit as well. the embarrassing thing is that we are not sure how long it was there. i'm just glad i caught in on saturday (4/24/10). the rash is about the size of a silver dollar, with a pale dot where the actual bite was.
we are still open to any and all advice out there.
thanks

My daughter was 7 when she was bitten and was treated with 3 weeks of amoxy. I think she was given 1500mg a day.

She seemed much better at the end of the 3 weeks and regained her strength over the next few months. We thought (and were told by her pediatrician) that she was fine.

Now I know, 7 years later, that she was not "cured", but the 3 weeks of medicine was enough to put the lyme into cyst form where it hybernated within her.

For the last 7 years, although she has not been "sick", she has had many strange symptoms which we now know are from lyme & coinfections hybernating in her body.

She's had various streaks and stretch marks (now we know from Bartonella), trouble with acid reflux (last year diagnosed with GERD and Barrett's esophagus), and more.

My advice to you, get your son to an ILADS trained LLMD who will know how to treat him correctly. Your little boy's future health is nothing to mess around with.

Wishing all the best health for your family!

I'm not sure I would feel happy with 3 mths. of treatment to prevent chronic illness after what I

have been thru. I would see a LLMD to keep that from happening.
