I'm trying to decide if I should keep take my Boniva infusions. My last bone density showed 25% improvement. However, I started with an alternative doctor and she is completely against Boniva saying it is very toxic. Many of yo probably also read about the jaw problems and tooth bone loss some people get with these type of drugs. I have been having jaw discomfort for several months now but just attribute it to the lyme. I'm thing of just forgetting the whole boniva thing. Any input? Thanks and God bless Theresa

If it were me, I'd rather I stuck with vitamin D3 and daily Calcium supplements. Boniva can cause your jaw to become necrotic - meaning death of your jaw bone tissue.
But that's just me

It sounds like you have been on Boniva for awhile? I'm assuming that you are in the high risk category (female, small frame, close to middle age, low dairy consumption?) and that is why your doctor ordered the bone density test in the first place.

It is great that the Boniva has helped improve your bone density by approx 25%. Now, what does your alternative doctor recommend for maintaining and improving your bone density if you stop taking Boniva?

One thing that concerns me about Boniva and the other Biphosphonates is that they do help prevent bone loss but they do this by stopping the body's natural process of tearing down and rebuilding. So you are left with old bone that is not as strong as newer bone. So even though the bone density scans look better, your bones may not actually be better/stronger. That is why you are at higher risk for femur fractures.

There are supplements such as Jarrow's "Bone up" and New Chapter's "Bone Strength" that can support your body with the proper nutrients to add bone strength. You need more than just Calcium and Vit D to do this.

If you are nervous about stopping Boniva, you can still benefit from taking a good bone support supplement. After a few months, do another bone scan and make your decision from there.

I sure wouldn't want to take it ... none of those bone density drugs are safe in my humble opinion. Look for alternatives.

"Perfect Bones" is a book by Pamela Levin.

Thanks for the replies. I decided not to take the Boniva. I was getting it by infusion for one year. I was never able to take others like fosomas, etc oranlly because of espohagus problems. I'm 60, never drank milk, always had bad teeth, got lyme, babs and bart 15 years ago. I was diagnosed with osteopenia about 20 years ago. I went thru early meno and have slow thyroid. Vitanim D was bery low a year ago ago and that has improved. You can see I'm a poster girls for osteoporosis. The alternative gave me super boron. I will talk to her further about other alternative for improving my bones. My exercies level is nil since this recurrent of lyme. I'm doing detox with her now and it is a shame to have to put something that toxic into my bloodstream. At the moment I am off all meds except the thyroid. I'll get back to the board if I hear anything exciting about bone alternatives. Thanks. God Bless Theresa

There's an osteoporosis site called www.osteopenia3.com.

My own experience, and that of people on this site, is that you CAN increase your bone density without the bisphonates, using a list of tools. The catch is, you have to do EVERYTHING on the list.

I've tried it, and found it to be true for me. If there are 6 things to take and do and if i only do 5, it doesn't work, the result is more bone loss.

Exercise is crucial--- without exercise you'll surely lose bone. And it has to be both kinds of exercize! You have to do the 20 minutes vigorous running, jumping, stairclimbing etc, (called "weight-bearing"), AND ALSO the "resistance" exercize like wearing a 10-lb weighted vest for one hour a day. You have to do BOTH, or it doesn't work.

I take STRONTIUM (non-radioactive kind), 680 mg per day, i find that essential. There's a lot of research.

Also important is Vitamin K2-4 or Vitamin K2-7. There is research. i'm omitting the details here.

Keep your Vitamin D-25 serum levels pretty high.

Green leafy vegetables are said to be better than milk (omitting details).

I personally have to take special kinds of Calcium, since i don't think i absorb regular calcium pills very well. I take Life Extension brand Bone Restore.

You have to get your trace minerals balanced.

There are other theories. There are some new Chinese herb pills i've heard about, have to research.

I certainly would never take bisphosphonates.

My LLMD says that testosterone is crucial for building bone.

Ask for drops under the tongue.

Have you ever done any detox from heavy metals ?They displace minerals in bone and are the real culprits here.

Detox under guidance of a knowledgeable practitioner is absolutely necessary.

Good luck to you. I am in the same boat as well and will not go near the pharmaceuticals.

Without weight bearing exercise, you simply will not build strong bones. You do need the basic building blocks of Calcium, Magnesium and vitamin D, but healthy astronauts in a no gravity environment lose bone density fast because of weightlessness.

Women in countries that carry around water jugs day in and day out, have very strong bones. They probably do not have the perfect diet, but the weight bearing exercise forces the bone to grow stronger. It builds up to the strength it needs to be based on the load it is exposed to.
