Not the same thing as HPU/KPU at all but can coexist.
The light as a feather yellow flakes, sometimes erroneously referred to as Brewer's Yeast can be very helpful as there are some good probiotics in Nutritional Yeast (and, yes, it is safe for those with candida).
Have you tried Olive Leaf Extract & or DGL (a form of licorice)?
Gluten-free ? That helps the gut tremendously, in most cases.
KPU/HPU and other kinds of porphyria are discussed in this thread. And, yes, any kind of porphyria can cause intense abdominal pain when it flares. ---------------------

To be clear, while the names are sometimes mixed up, Brewer's Yeast is not the same as nutritional yeast. Nutritional Yeast is very light, fluffy yellow flakes or powder. Grown as it should be, on beet or cane sugar, it is gluten free. Check the growing process of the brand purchased.
"Is nutritional yeast gluten free?" - You need to find out how the yeast is produced. If it is grown on malted barley it will contain gluten and is not oK.
If it is grown on sugar beet it will be gluten-free.
Primary-grown nutritional yeast is grown on mixtures of beet and sugar cane molasses.
After it is grown and the fermentation process is complete, the yeast is harvested, washed, pasteurized, and dried at a high temperature. As a result, this yeast is guaranteed to be free of the Candida albicans strain of yeast. It contains no gluten.

Brewer's yeast is a byproduct of the brewing process. It is grown on hops, grain, and malt and develops a bitter flavour. [different from nutritional yeast and if grown on hops or barley, is not gluten free]
The bitterness is removed through a process which can lower the nutritional quality of the yeast. Sold in tablet or powdered form, it can be stirred into beverages or sprinkled into cereals.
Torula yeast is grown on waste sulphite liquid from wood pulp. Despite its range of B vitamins, minerals, and proteins, some consumer groups have questioned the safety of its growing methods.
