Does anyone wake up with swollen ankles and legs? I don't think this is a Lyme symptom but it seems like maybe I am having problems with my kidneys.

Does anyone get this?

I am planning on seeing a urologist to see if they have clues.

Currently I'm on Mepron and Zith.

Mepron can cause Liver and kidney problems. You need to have this checked while on this med-- and yes swollen ankles and feet can be a sign of kidney problems.

It can be kidney but also liver or heart disease.
It also can be a lymphatic problem.

If the lymphsystem is clogged and bacteria and viruses are in the feet the ankles are swelling as well.
I drink red root juice every day that helps for the lymphatic system.

I think the urologist cannot help, better a nephrologist.
I would start with a 24 hour urine at the lab.If it shows elevated protein it could be kidney.Your family doctor can order 24 hour urine for protein and creatinine.

Thank you.

I have never heard of red root juice. I'll give that a try.

I had a urine test and I think it came out ok. I also have pain which is really bothering me.

I'll look into the nephrologist.

My legs have often been swollen since the beginning of the [long] illness. Terrible after flights and late in the day.

In my case, I think much is water retention, some inflammation [esp. below knee] and curcumin has helped to keep it in check.

Worth checking out,

Carry

If your swelling is edema it will dent when you press it. Water swelling goes up and down. I had it when I was pregnant as the baby affected my circulation. I think it is unusual to get it in the morning because your feet would be elevated which would help to reduce the swelling.

Bartonella causes another type of swelling which is common in the feet and legs as well as other parts of the body This swelling does not dent when you press it and it does not get bigger and smaller during the day. I have it around the tops of my ankles and it will hurt sometimes as though the circulation is cut off.

I dont know if this relates to you. Please disregard if it does not.

There are certain hormones in the body that regulate salt and water retention. Recently, my doctor tested me for the following:

Vasopressin also called Anti-diuretic hormone (ADH)(made by the Hypothalamus).

He also tested ACTH, and Cortisol.

http://www.vivo.colostate.edu/hbooks/pathphys/endocrine/hypopit/adh.html

Im having a different problem as you. Just some information you can ask your doctor about as Im not a doctor and not sure if it may relate to you as I am still learning.

my llmd said i have a lot of edemia fluid, but he never told me what to do about it. my entire body swells up quite often. for a while i was uncomfortably swollen for months with no relief... and i wasn't on any meds, so i don't think it was a side effect. i would like to get my kidneys and liver tested as well soon.

Haley,
ask for a 12 hour urine test. Everything else is a waste of money. You want to know how much protein you lose per day and also you need to know what you did eat.

If you eat zero protein you do not lose protein. If you eat a lot you can lose more.
You should not have kidney pain.

The red root juice helps to some degree. Probably tablets are cheaper.

Thank you all for the feedback. I believe I will be taking a 24 hour urine test tomorrow.

Karen - why do you say a 12 hour test? What is the difference?

Also, are you saying that I should eat things high in protein before the test?

I was able to email my doctor and she suggests stopping the Mepron.

I should also mention that the amount of urine has decreased significantly.

Haley,

sorry it is 24 hours.I was tired.

They do not say you what to eat. You should just eat as normal.
But probably write a list for yourself how much protein intake you have.

F.e.. if they find you lose 500 mg of protein and your intake was only 500

or

if they find 500 mg and your intake was 5,000
or 25,000

this makes a difference in my opinion.

They will just tell you how much you have flushed. If you eat no protein at all on this day you cannot flush any and it will be 0 and they will tell you you are 100 % healthy.

You just should eat normal.
They do not compare intake and lost protein. Just I like to know what I take in and what I lose.

You also lose more protein when you do a lot of exercise.

I sometimes have one ankle more swollen than the other because I have more inflammation in the veins ...

If one is really thick and the other not that is more like a clotting thing, you should mention it to the doctor.

Thanks Karen. I'm starting the 24 hour pee test on Sunday.

I do have swelling in both ankles but yesterday I had excruciating pain in my right ankle where the large blood vessel is. I think the vein may have busted. I have thought about clotting as well but since I have other symptoms that could indicate kidneys, I wanted to have it checked.

Thanks everyone for great feedback.

Be very aggressive about edema.

My neighbor's mom had swelling in her legs and ankles.

She is also CDC positive for Lyme.

One of her kidneys is scarred from what the doc says is a "long term type of chronic infection".

She has received dialysis for a few days and remains in and out of the hospital.

Every test in the book does not reveal a cause.

She ignored the swelling for a couple of months and it wasn't good.

Hope yours is something easy to deal with.

Hugs,

Geneal

My wife has had this symptom from the very beginning since she was bit by the Deer Tick.

I never could get find a permanent solution until recently. It appears the co-infection Bartonella was the cause. After treating it a couple of times, the ankle swelling went away for many days for the first time ever.

There can be more than one cause for this, but in her case, it seems it was Bart all along. She really did not have any other typical symptoms, so I never really suspected it.

Dan
