Help! My 16 yo daughter has been housebound for almost a year now. She was diagnosed with Lyme, Bart, Babs and Erlichea. She began treatment in Feb of this year.

She started on mino. Then changed to zith and mepron. Then when the Erlichea test came back, she was switched to Doxy. Right now she is taking Doxy 100mg 2 x day, every other day and 1/2 t of Mepron twice per day.

I know her doxy dose is low, but she is so senstive that we have to start slowly. After 4 months of treatment she is finally turning the corner. She is feeling better. Last weekend she even went to a dance.

She wants to get off doxy for the summer. I don't blame her. She wants to go swimming, go to the beaches etc... She is sick of being housebound.

I am afraid to take her off of doxy because it is the first drug that seems to have worked at all. I am thinking that if she quits the doxy and gets back on Bactrim/Mepron combo that she will get sick again.

I can call her LLND and I am sure she will change her meds, but is it the right thing? I would love to hear other's thoughts on this topic. Thanks!

I am also doing better on doxy. Needed 8-10 weeks to get to normal dose.
Doxy also works for chlamydia pneumonia really great. Can she have NAC? If she gets flu like symptoms from NAC she might also have cpn.

I would for myself consider switching to biaxin instead of doxy but talked only to a general MD not a LLMD or specialist for chlamydia pn.

Hope others kick in here.

I have a 12 year old who has been mostly housebound for a while. She is not on doxy now, but if she was, I would let her get off from it to see if she could still go to the beaches, etc.

Maybe she will have to get back on it, but at least she will know why she has to give up the sun for now.

My daughter has taken doxy in the summer before, but only because she wasn't out in the sun much anyway. Her LLMD at the time said she could get off from the doxy for a few days before going out in the sun. He gave her Ceftin to take on the off days. You might ask your LLND about something like that.

When my daughter feels well enough to do anything, we take advantage of it. I wouldn't want her meds to be the deciding factor without making sure there weren't other equally effective meds.

I did doxy last summer and am still doing it this summer. Its worth it to get better. Just wear sunscreen and cover up with long sleeves and long pants. Or find things to do out of the sun. There are plenty more summers to come.
