I am having extreme anxiety and some depression for about a week. I saw a new LLMD this week who kept me on flagyl, and added a ton of supplements and homeooathics I really don't understand, and for the anxiety/depression she gave me klonopin and doxepin elixir. Has anyone used this combination before? I have used the klonopin and it helps me sleep but does not take care of the anxiety. I am afraid the doxepin is going to wipe me out. I would rather take a regular antidepressant like zoloft or lexapro, but she days no.
Anyone use this doxepin elixir and what is your experience?

Thanks

I was given doxepin for sleep about 4 years ago and it made me hyper so I didn't use it, but saved the bottle.

I learned it's in the antihistamine family and antihistamines always do that to me even if in a small dose.

Do you have the liquid or tablets? I had the liquid and the 3 drops prescribed are huge. Comes with a gigantic dropper.

I ran across it in the cupboard recently and tried it again with just a very small amount under my tongue if I wake up at 4:00 am and that worked the couple of times I tried it.

If you have the liquid you could start out with a very small amount and see how it goes.

I occasionally take .25 clonazapam (similar to klonopin) before bed and I'm ok with the combo but does make me tired.

Were you given the doxepin for sleep or depression/anxiety? The klonopin is enough to make me sleep without the doxepin, but still left with the issue of anxiety and depression to deal with. I have the liquid.

I went to my PCP for the anxiety/depressionwho gave me zoloft, but she does not want me to take any supplements with it becuase she does not know who they would interact. So I feel stuck and don't know who to follow.

I'm pretty sure my LLMD prescribed both of them the same time. The doxepin was for sleep. Clonazapam for anxiety.

But I'd call a pharmacist just to be sure. They're better than MDs for knowledge about interactions.

SOOO addictive. I can't imagine taking flagyl without an anti-depressant...but then the SSRI's are addictive too.

I've always taken tricyclics.... somewhat addictive as well! UGH.

Hope this works for you!!! [Smile]

A very low dose lexapro helped with depression and anxiety for me. I decided to wean off before my lyme diagnosis. Klonopin nearly killed me when I tried to come off of the drug, so just a warning there for you! Although everyone reacts differently to meds, klonopin was pretty brutal for me... major sobbing episodes where i just could not stop crying. Lexapro seemed to work much more efficiently. Klonopin is a depressant by the way...does not help with depression (actually can worsen it), but does help many with anxiety (in the short-term until you build tolerance to it, which you will eventually and then you will have to up your dose to get the same therapeutic benefits). Lexapro really helped me with sleep and klonopin did not - I tossed and turned and had really weird dreams, did not feel refreshed upon waking. I only took klonopin low-dose for one month by the way.

This is just my experience, so don't listen to me as I'm not a Dr.

I take Doxepin at night, so I can sleep, and it knocks me out.
