I was in my daughters room and saw something like a small spider or a large tick. I wanted to catch it so when I went to swat the sucker, it jumped around avoiding me. I never did catch it but got a good look. The critter was grayish in color, perhaps some brown. It was larger than the photos of deer ticks I saw.
Any suggestions?

I've never seen a hopping tick.
I would guess a spider or another bug.
All the ticks I've seen crawl.
Just my very humble opinion of course.

Yeah, I agree. Some small beetles look like ticks and jump around.

It Sounds like a "jumping spider" to me. They have 2 tiny, forward-facing black, bead-shaped eyes. (Google: 'jumping spider pictures') They are (typically) carnivorous, but don't generally go for any prey bigger than a large fly.
They also aren't known to spread Lyme. Your daughter is safe!
(They ARE qu-i--c--k, aren't they! )
