Anybody else having trouble finding generic Cortef? Hydrocortisone?

I am taking it for adrenal fatigue and all of a sudden Caremark can't find it in generic form. The brand name is $40 copay.. the generic is $15.

I smell a rat!

I had Walgreen's do some checking and they found out it is in very short supply nationwide.

Shall we blame Big Pharma for that one?

Anybody have info ??

I suggest calling around to all the pharmacies in your area. This is what I did when Armour was in short supply. I was able to find it eventually.

Also, you may want to contact the manufacturer directly to see what is going on and to see if they know where you can get it locally.

Good luck!

Hi Lymetoo! If you can't afford the Cortef, you might try Licorice Root. Just keep an eye on your blood pressure. It can raise you blood pressure. If it does, just go off of it for a few days, and the blood pressure will go down. Then take a smaller dose.

Also Astragalus Root is good support for the Adrenal Gland.

I took Cortef in the past, and it didn't help me nearly as much as the Licorice Root. But we all have different problems.

Good Luck!

Thanks for the suggestions. I will call some other pharmacies tomorrow.

Thanks, Rivendell.. I've wondered what natural stuff I could change to, since I am on a low dose of cortef. I do have heart trouble, so not sure I'm game for licorice.

I'm using off some I already had. I certainly hope I can find it when I need it again!

Isocort is natural cortisone (adrenal glandular). It worked better for me than Cortef. You can buy it online. I can't remember the price.

Try Dr Wilson's Adrenal Rebuilder, I saw a HUGE improvement (along with Armour) in the first 2 months. "Adrenal Fatigue" is a great book..I highly recommend it.

When push comes to shove you can use OTC hydrocortisone cream. I don't have the ratio off hand but I can look it up if you need it.

Good luck [Smile]

The price varies depending on the manufacturer but at CVS it's $1.30 for an approximate 10 day supply of Hydrocortisone cream. CHeck the generic manufacturers for Cortef in the pharmacy book. You can also get pills for $4 at Target or Walmart, as long as it is indeed the generic.

The problem is that there is a shortage. Caremark says I can only get it in brand name.. no generic right now.

Walgreen's also had trouble finding any.

I was paying $15 for 90 day supply.. awesome.. but now can't get it.

I just picked up Hyrdorcortisone last week - from CVS. Do you have a CVS nearby? Maybe try them?
