Daughter has been on Bactrim for about a month. Started out at only 1 tab a day, then last week decided to try 1/2 a tab a day due to symptoms...

Headaches, lightheaded, throat issues, increased anxiousness. The decrease did not lessen the symptoms.

Last night about a hour after taking the bactrim, she said her throat felt "weird"...

Then she said it felt like it was swelling and hard to breath..

I gave her benadryl and it seem to relax everything.

She was taking the Bactrim for bartonella, but I wonder was this an allergic reaction as I thought or Babesia rearing it ugly head?

Notice in reading past posts alot of people mention throat issues with Babs.

Our daughter has mentioned that her throat feels smaller or feels hard to swallow at times,( since the bactrim) she is also more anxious since treating with Bactrim, so I mentioned this throat issue at her last LLMD appt. Not much was said on the issue.

So we have stopped the Bactrim and waiting for the Dr. to call back.

Jane, so sorry to hear this.

My daughter had a "weird" throat feeling when she first started Lyme treatment, and we stopped the meds thinking it was an allergic reaction.

In hindsight, I think it was a yeast dye off (or even Lyme or company dye off); however, I don't know for sure. LLMF won't prescribe it again due to uncertainty.

Bactrim is highly allergic to those with sulfa issues, so I think you are doing the right thing by stopping it and talking to the LLMD.

Sorry to hear she is going through so much--

Hugs!

Jane,

I'm supposed to start bactrim tomorrow for bartonella treatment.

Truth be told, I'm scared to death of having a severe reaction, as I don't know if I'm allergic to sulfa.

However, I have been taking ceftin for lyme. Every few days, my throat feels tight.

I usually get this feeling right above the collarbone in the lower neck. If I even slightly bend my head down, it practically triggers my gag reflex.

I've read that this could be the lymph nodes swelling from all the bacteria/die off.

I think it's smart that you stopped the bactrim until you can speak to your LLMD.

All the best to you and your daughter. I hope she gets some relief very soon!

Good luck jwick25.

Our daughter has been mentioning throat issues since taking the Bactrim.

However, she noticed it more so when nervous and since treating with Bactrim her anxiousness is worse.

The other night , it seemed more of a problem and some trouble getting a breath.

So, we have stopped the Bactrim and Dr. feels probably a sulfa allergy.

On the plus side she said, the Bactrim made her head feel less" weird".

Funny that you mentioned the nervousness.

My LLMD - knowing that I am scared about this - advised to do my best to remain calm. He explained that anxiety could actually

trigger physical responses that could mimic that of a reaction (throat tighness, etc.).

I have noticed that whenever I am particularly anxious, my neck feels tighter.

I hope that your daughter starts to feel well.

The bactrim seemed to help her "weird head feeling."

When she seemed to be in distress with her throat, I gave her 2 teas. of benadryl and it helped alot.

So, She will not be taking the Bactrim again. But many people have had good results. Best to you.
