Hello <<<<< Lyme Family >>>>>,

Trying to find a balance in the many Lyme and Co's- issues/symptoms/ Diabetes /going gluten-free /meds-supplements and so on.

ANd if this needs to go to general that's okay, not sure where it goes...

On a different thread I was asking questions about how to ease some 'IBS' type symptoms, and was looking at what I eat.

Sorry if it seems rambling ,Here is the question:

IS all Ice cream bad for us ?

I cannot do the sugar alcohols in 'sugar free [serious -IC- type burn and sting.]

I try to be watchful, because of gluten/oat problems [oats allergy could put me in the hospital].

We have occasionally,a bit of Ice Cream [not during the loose bowel/diarrhea times of course, sorry if TMI ].

Trying to eat properly w/ the Diabetes too, but I am always wondering...When I get gluten free items ,not being able to avoid some sugars.

If I am getting Ice creams am I getting glutens, that I don't know about? [ I do check the ingredients list ,but feel I may be missing some things].

It gets confusing... I'm sure I'm not the only one trying to balance this all out...and I don't like having grumpy guts.

If you've made it this far thru my ramblings, thank you for reading, and any input!

ice cream in particular? the best thing to do is make it yourself. then you know exactly what's in it. if you don't have an ice cream amker, yu can make it a couople diff ways without one.
it's jusst eggs, cream, and stevia basically. you can even make it in a ziplock bag!
the gluten free sites have comprehensive lists of all of the ingredients (unusual names, etc) that have gluten or hidden gluten.

<<<<< TxC' and Beth22 >>>>>,

TxC'hubby thanks for the bump up for me!

Beth22,Thanks for the idea,I think we have the ziploc ice cream recipe bookmarked.

TxC' and I are trying to watch what we eat carefully, and sometimes the need for something sweet just gets overpowering!!!

It's almost payday,so maybe we can get the ingredients after we pay some bills!!!

Oh yum, tasty ice cream and healthy at least in small amounts!!!

Thanks again, for the input ,Ill double check on the GF sites too!

Ice cream is high in lactose. Lactose intolerance is fairly common. Taking high-dose probiotics an hour before eating ice cream might reduce the lactose intolerance symptoms, but no guarantees. You can try to use lactose-free milk for the ice cream if you make it yourself, or you can use dairy free milk (coconut milk, nut milk, soy milk, rice milk - but watch the sugar content!!!). You can make nut milk yourself at home (just need some water, nuts, sweetener, and a blendar), thus can use stevia instead of sugar in the nut milk.

Gluten cross-contamination is rampant in commercial food production facilities. I'd suspect any troubles you suspect from the store-bought ice-cream to be from cross-contamination, and/or the sugar in the ice cream.

Absolutely!! Wouldn't even have to be cross-contamination... there could be hidden gluten in the "flavorings" and other categories. They don't want you to know it contains gluten and they DON'T have to tell you it contains it.

Sugar and sugar alcohols create yeast, which creates IBS or diarrhea.

I would try to stay away from Milk Ice cream, Soy Dream and Turtle Moutain have some really good alternatives that are also tested to be gluten free. I have Celiac and have never been sick from having them. Also I think one of the brands now does fruit sweetened ice creams, so its still sugar, but a little less aggressive than the processed stuff.

Hi there <<<<< Razzle, Lymetoo, and WhitneyS >>>>>,

Thanks for the input/info'/and link, TxC'and I are both trying to be more aware of what we eat, and when.

I like a little something sweet[w/in reason, diabetic issues], but have had a feeling I was shooting myself in the paws in some way w/ regular ice creams.

Cannot do the sugar alcohols at all, serious IC issues. But the yeast and sugars makes sense.

I'll check on the GF type ice creams and such.

My paternal Grandma used to make her own nut-butters,w/ a little blender machine, small not like the regular ones.

The 'IBS' symptoms are making me miserable,so I need to get something healthier for the sweet tooth.

We are checking around the health food stores, for Wormwood here as well, really hard to get a hold of.

I'm a bit chicken of buying things on line, but may need to start.

I mentioned Wormwood ,because I wonder if I am dealing w/ some parasite issues and yeast as well.

Tried wormwood last summer, and found I felt better after several small doses [they had a capsule of powdered wormwood].

Pretty sure I saw Soy Dream 'milk',but not the ice cream, but we'll be checking when out tomorrow.I like the sound of coconut milk too!

Trying to be more watchful what we eat/drink, get some more energy for both TxC' and myself and be able to feel a bit better thru the coming winter.

Thanks again, for the ideas and links, etc to each replier!!!

A little update :

Had an interesting talk w/ the gluten free food stock-er/vitamin/supplement ordering folk at our Local Fred Meyer store.

I showed them the cartons on Silk dreams, Soy dreams, Almond dreams etc. for 'Ice cream' and 'milks'.

It says 'natural flavors/other natural flavors' or similar wording . After finding out that some companys use 'Isolated Oat Product',and don't always report it on ingredients lists I want to know ...

What are those natural flavors...Oats can put me in hospital...

Finding safe, tasty foods can be a challenge!

Thanks again to each of the repliers.
