i've been reading about both diets. apparently they are the same right? no sugar, no bread, pasta, just meat, eggs and vegetables.

i can't see any difference really.

I don't think so. I think the "Lyme diet" is used to avoid candida ....

I've been struggling with this a little bit.....yes, I think they are very similar diets. But I think this diet, rich in animal protein, also creates a more acidic environment (instead of the preferred alkaline.) And a more acidic environment allows bacteria, yeast, cancer, etc. to grow. I feel like this puts us in a catch 22.

Three years ago when I was off meds and feeling good, a doctor friend of mine gave me one of those strips to test my acid levels. He could not believe how alkaline I was. We repeated it several times. Fast forward to now, being on antibiotics for over a year, on the lyme/yeast diet; my new doctor gave me a packet of strips for me to monitor my acid levels. I was stunned to find I am totally acidic right now.....having yeast issues, etc. I'm taking a break from abx to get yeast under control. Doing herbal stuff for the time being. Then will get back to abx.

Grains are low on the acid-forming chart. So I have been playing around with adding very small amounts of whole grains (quinoa, steel cut oatmeal, brown rice, millet etc.) and maybe an occasional green apple. I also started taking aloe very juice (yuck! but alkalining.)

Wish we could have fruit (also alkalining). Miss is SOOOOOO much!

If anyone has any thoughts to share.....

Randibear my LLMD prescribes me nystatin tablets. I take 1 four times a day to prevent candida and also a probiotic. I've never had a problem and been on lots of antibiotics including IV. Give it a try. I hope you get what you have cleared up soon.

I ate whole grains the whole time I was in treatment (except for wheat, I avoided that). I could not eat all protein and veggies. It would not work for me, made me feel horrible. I ate all the grain I wanted.

I also ate berries, pineapple, and apples.

Six - I'm so glad to hear that. Did you ever have a yeast issue with what you were eating? I don't feel well without whole grains either... very weak. I think blueberries are a good choice. Is pineapple too sweet, or do you think that's okay? (I love it!)

I think the alkaline debate still has a lot of mystery around it. Some say all citrus is alkalinizing
.
the Weston Price folks, who I respect, suggest a diet high in healthy meat and dairy fat is the way to go.

At the same time they seem to recognize the role of alkalinization.

Also it seems there is some evidence that only a certain percentage of folks do well without grain and simple sugars.

Animal and dairy fat is terrible for the liver. Many with lyme already have seriously impaired livers and a higher percentage of ill people have fatty liver disease. Animal and diary fats really clog up the liver.

We do need a little cholesterol for our adrenals to properly function, but it's a very small amount compared to the plant based and fish oils that work better for those with liver issues. Wild salmon and lean chicken win over the fatty cuts of beef for most days of the week.

I pass out without grains along with my veggies. I'm totally gluten-free and eat only whole grains but I passed out so many times from trying to avoid grains. It damaged my body.

Berries, apples and some other fruits are also vital to my cells. I think we do a lot of damage avoiding the whole fruit category.

Scurvy is also a very real consideration.

The way I take it .. they ARE similar or about the same. But I don't do well eating grains...so.. I'm different from those who like do OK on them.
