I used to get cold sores (thanks, mom) once a year, usu. in April when I would start getting more sun. They were always on my bottom lip.

In April '09, 3 days after my tick bite, I broke out with tiny little cold sores (they looked different and felt different than the usuals), about 30 running from below my lip down to my chin.

Then I was on doxy for 4 weeks and when I got off (so this was June of '09) it happened again.

Since then, I've had no cold sores until now.

I started a new abx combo about 10 days ago and I'm either herxing a bit or symptoms are coming back or something.

This past week, I got what I thought was a pimple at the bottom, side of my nose. The next day about 7 of them were running up the side of my nose.

The next day, I had some running from my nose down to my mouth and again across my chin in a straight line.

I take L-lysine, one a day, so I was suprised about this and started taking more. I took 6 a day for 2 days and everything went away.

I went back to one pill a day for 2 or 3 days and today I woke up with a giant cold sore on my lip. I used a topical and took 3 more L-lysine today but nothing is stopping this monster!

I also feel achy fatigue and aggitation today. Erk, what is going on? Any ideas?

Sometimes ABXs will wake up virueses as they begin to kill the bugs. You are on Lysine , I have taken a probiotic pill..opened it and made a paste out of it and put in on the cold sores inside and outside the mouth and nose. It helps tremendously. Are you positive for any of the herpes viruses? HHV6, HHV 1 0r 2? EBV? Makuna honey is another thing that can help topically.

Stress can also cause them.

sk8ter, I have never been tested for any viruses.

littlebit, I haven't been under any unusual stress, just the stress that comes with aggitation.

So maybe the new abx combo i'm on woke up this virus?

Wonder why L-lysine didn't keep it at bay...

I will try the probiotic paste. Thank you!!!

It might be time for some antivirals. I like coconut oil for drying up the herpes.

If that is what it is. I would check on shingles treatment if it gets close to eyes. Very dangerous.

My guess is that the immune system takes a hit battling the first infection. It's no longer functioning properly, and other pathogens that are dormant in the body reactivate.

This is just a guess....but it sure seems to fit what happened to me. I've got several pathogens that I'm dealing with. And I've felt better as I've treated them and knocked them back.

Best, Timaca

I'm also dealing with this...and it's been especially intense since I started taking nystatin, although I've had to struggle with mouth sores since I got sick.

For me, Vitamin B12 can sometimes be effective. Right now, I'm sitting here with a probiotic paste on the sores I have on my lips.

Hopefully, that will work for me. Llysine doesn't seem to keep the sores at bay for me.

I'm not sure what causes this, but I hope you're able to find some relief.

Andie

Any regular labs like Quest (they send it out to their specialty lab Focus labs)can test for the antibodies . The tests you should have are : EBV all antibodies, HHV6 , HHV 1 and 2, CMV and mycoplasmas.

These are usually high in most of us. Many regular docs won't treat as their usual mondra is everyone has these viruses. But not everyone has titers that are 5-10 times the normal values !!!!.

Anti virals whether prescription or natural like coconut oil, OLE, oregano can help the immune system.
Hope this helps.

Thanks, sk8ter. I do take OLE daily and coconut oil when i remember. I'm interested to find out what my LLMD thinks. I like plans, so I hope he comes up with one. Thanks, everyone!

Since they look and feel different than the usual cold sores that you've had and they occurred immediately after the bite maybe they aren't cold sores? Perhaps they are associated with an infection (viral or otherwise) that you got from the tick? Have you had them looked at by your LLMD or a dermatologist?

Here are some pictures of blisters caused by a bacterial infection called impetigo.
http://dermnetnz.org/bacterial/impetigo.html

I would write down the information you presented here and present it to your LLMD and ask for their help/opinion.

After I started treatment with abx I had many viral symptoms but no cold sores only canker sores which are totally different than cold sores. I was put on valtrex and I've been on it the whole time I've been on abx and that has made a big difference with viral symptoms for me.

When I was researching mouth sores I found some info on cold sores that I'll include here in case it is useful. I didn't spend a lot of time researching cold sores because most of my mouth sores were canker sores so I'm sure there is more info out there regarding treatments for cold sores.

Cold sores, also called fever blisters are common and very contagious. They are caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV-1). Studies show that between 30%-60% of children carry the virus by age 2. Typically tenderness, tingling, or burning appear before the lesion appears. Herpes lesions begin as blisters and then crust over.

Supplements shown to be helpful for cold sores.
Acidophilus
Calcium and Magnesium
Colloidal Silver
Essential Fatty Acids (EFA's such as fish oil)
Fish Oil Products
L-lysine
Vitamin C
Zinc lozenges

Styptic pencil can be helpful in treating a cold sore. Apply the pencil immediately after you notice the sore beginning to form. Make sure to dry the area where the sore is in order for the pencil to be effective. You may need to apply it several times.

Hope you get it figured out.

when i got shingles i ordered some terrasil cream. it's made of collodial silver and some other stuff.

it really really helped. and it's supposed to help with cold sores and other skin disorders.

if you'd like i'll send it to you. i only used a very small amount.

course you can get it online and it costs about 25 bucks.

mike gets these when he's out in the sun, course he's hepatitis positive too.

stress and low immune can cause it. might want to get immune support. mine is a vitamin supplement and it seems to help.

Well I have had the opposite thing happen to me. I use to get several cold sores a year, before LD. Had them most of my life.

Now its been over 4 years since I contracted LD and I have not had even 1 cold sore. What do you make of that?

hmm, wonder if your treatment is suppressing the herpes virus? cause that's what cold sores are really, just herpes.

mike doesn't take anything but if he goes out in this texas sun, major major cold sores, or fever blisters.
